UK MOX Facility Becomes A Mega Money Pit, Japan Shares Losses
[Translate] The UK government announced in August it would close the Sellafield MOX plant. The troubled plant to date has not produced any usable MOX fuel. Japan so far has been the only customer and the 1999 shipment to Takahama was returned after it was found to be defective. With TEPCO and CHUBU electric being the only customers lined up. TEPCO obviously isn’t in a position to attempt any further MOX programs. CHUBU owns Hamaoka nuclear power plant that has been shut down and a restart there is unlikely. Japan contributed a considerable amount of money to the plant in the UK, with the plant closure that money is lost. One of the major issues surrounding Sellafield is that the plutonium stockpile has been promoted as an asset. Without a reprocessing plant and … Read entire article »

Tomari Nuclear Plant To End Mox Program
[Translate] Hokkaido Electric, owner of the Tomari Nuclear plant has announced they will end their pursuit to run MOX (Mixed Oxide plutonium fuel) in reactor #3. Hokkaido was caught up in the country-wide scandal where power companies were caught faking public support for MOX fuel programs. Our records show that no MOX fuel has been delivered to Tomari to date. There was a planned May 2011 shipment to Japan that may have been going to carry Tomari’s MOX assemblies. That shipment was cancelled after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. Executives involved in the scandal received temporary pay cuts, none were fired for their involvement in the scandal. Notes On Corium And Containment
[Translate] My notes (Nancy’s) on the Reactor Safety Training Course (R-800) from the NRC http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML0210/ML021080117.pdf The notes are an abbreviated gathering of parts that may be relateable to Fukushima from sections 3 and 4. Suppression Chamber: Steam can be sent from the RPV via a safety valve and piping into the suppression chamber (torus). If the pressure in the suppression chamber (wetwell/torus) is higher than that in the drywell vacuum breakers equalize the pressure. There is a cooling spray system for the drywell portion of containment and also cooling system in the suppression chamber that runs through a heat exchanger to cool the water in the suppression chamber. Mark 1 reactors also have a direct vent system to the outside in the suppression chamber to relieve pressure. (There were attempts to open these at Fukushima) Containment: Mark 1 containments were not specifically … Read entire article »

Fukushima Daiichi Intended To Increase MOX Use In Unit 3
[Translate] Editors note: Documentation TEPCO #1 Documentation TEPCO #2 Preliminary Analysis of Tepco Documentation 3-2 “Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 According to the results confirm the soundness of the new MOX fuel in the long-term storage” July 31, 2010 Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency Introduction: Analysis of this document began under the premise that MOX fuel could in no possible terms be viable and intact after spending a period of 10-11 years in the spent fuel pool. Documents show that 32 Mixed Oxide Fuel Assemblies were manufactured and sent to Fukushima-I in 1999. These fuel assemblies were then stored in the Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor 3 pending local government approval. This approval did not come until late summer of 2010, at which point arrangements were made and the fuel … Read entire article »

He used to be a professor of Nagasaki University, and also the director of Nagasaki Univ International Hibakusha Center. This is a reason Fukushima residents and other JP citizens believed what he said during the early stage of the incident.) Purpose of the project: To reduce fear and worry among residents about effects of radiation. To follow health status of residents for the long time. Target population: All Fukushima residents who live in Fukushima at the March 11. This differs with certain materials (think lead versus water) and some will absorb more or less as radiation passes through. Japanese Waste and MOX Shipments From Europe
[Translate] This is a detailed article on the title subject from The World Nuclear Association. From 1969-90 there were more than 160 shipments of used nuclear reactor fuel from Japan to Europe. Reprocessing of the Japanese used fuel has been undertaken in UK and France under contract with Japanese utilities. Recovered fissile materials are returned to Japan as reactor fuel, notably as mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. The first shipment to Japan of immobilised high-level waste from reprocessing took place in 1995 and the 12th and last one from France was in 2007.
