Japan To Freeze Fast Breeder Reactor Program
[Translate] The science ministry plans to freeze the budget of Monju, Japan’s fast breeder reactor program by slashing it up to 80%. This would only leave enough funding to maintain the plant. The uncertainty of Japan’s nuclear plans were cited as a concern with the project. Monju has been plagued with problems. It has only run for an hour since its first testing twenty years ago. It suffered a liquid sodium leak that caused a fire back in 1995 along with a cover up. In 2010 it was restarted only to have a piece of equipment become lodged at an angle inside the reactor. Suzuki May Move Factory Away From Nuke Plants, Cities Call For Shutdown Of Hamaoka
[Translate] Suzuki has told local mayors near the Hamaoka nuclear power plant that they are considering moving their facility due to the risk from nuclear power in the area unless Hamaoka is shut down or safety assured. Chubu Electric signed a pact with the four nearby cities that it would assure plant safety and obtain the approval of the cities to continue operating the plant. This is the first large business to make such an announcement that they consider operating next to a nuclear plant too large of a business risk. 90% Of Japan’s Nuclear Reactors Will Be Offline
[Translate] As of Sunday JST 90% of Japan’s nuclear reactors will be offline. Shikoku Electric will shut down the #1 reactor at their Ikata power plant. Earlier this year the power companies in Japan claimed there would be widespread blackouts across Japan without nuclear power. 186,000 bq Cesium Found In Sludge 100 km From Fukushima Daiichi

Fukushima, Four Months Later

While the ministry already allows 10 municipalities where contamination levels from the prefecture’s stricken nuclear plant are low enough to handle debris under normal procedures, it has decided to expand the eased limits to other parts of the prefecture outside the nuclear no-go zone and evacuation areas. The move is aimed at speeding up rubble removal in Fukushima Prefecture, but authorities are required to handle it with care, including by decontaminating and managing it properly, the officials said.
