Commission Looks At Expanding Nuclear Evacuation Zones

[Translate] The Nuclear Safety Commission looks at expanding the planned evacuation zones around nuclear power plants. The current zones are 10km. New zones would be a multi-stage zone. 5km = immediate evacuation in an accident. 30km =  new evacuation zone. 50km = preventative action zone (to prevent internal exposure) The residents in the 50km zone would be targeted for protective iodine tablet distribution. No word if they are also developing a better system for iodine tablet distribution and instructions to the public. During the early days of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster many at risk communities were not given any instruction or given the impossible instruction to only take the pills under doctor supervision, in a disaster zone amid the chaos. The US is also considering expanding evacuation zones around nuclear power plants after learning how the … Read entire article »

Fukushima Evacuees Will Be Required To Undergo Mental Health Checks

[Translate] The Fukushima prefecture government health panel has announced evacuees and those who fall under the health screening scheme will now be required to undergo a mental health screening. It will start next month and include about 200,000 residents. Children will have their parents fill out a survey about their behavior, adults will be required to complete a survey themselves. Referrals to treatment resources will be available. This will also include 20,000 pregnant women including those that have left the region. This plan is extremely problematic in a number of ways. It appears to be mandatory, forcing people to submit to mental evaluation. The described program does not appear to have any mechanism for privacy. The mental evaluations are to be part of the study and may result in something that is normally … Read entire article »

High Levels Of Radiation Showing Up In Sea And Fukushima Residents

[Translate] Again flying in the face of TEPCO’s claims everything is fine, large levels of radiation are showing up in the region. Some Fukushima residents based on their location after the melt downs received large radiation doses in the range of three times the national limit. The more shocking part is that they are from the 30km zone, not the 20km evacuation zone. “The researchers estimated that radiation levels in the area during the two months before the evacuations came to 50 millisieverts.” Some residents received doses from 57 to 69 mSv. Some parts of Fukushima City read at 3.2 mSv yet the city is trying to go on as business as usual. Researchers at the JAEA have done their own estimates on sea releases during the early months and found levels at 15,000 terabecquerels. TEPCO … Read entire article »

Increases In Cesium In Urine From Fukushima

[Translate] Children in the Fukushima region were tested initially in May and more recently in late July. This testing is independent of any government effort and is being conducted by French NPO AGRO. One of the children tested saw an increase rather than a decrease in cesium levels. This child did not evacuate. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of decontamination and other efforts to lower exposure in Fukushima. Deer In Tochigi Contaminated With Radiation

[Translate] Wild deer found in Tochigi, south west of Fukushima prefecture tested positive for radiation contamination. The deer were found to have 590 to 2037 becquerels per kilogram in their meat. A quick map estimate shows this location to be over 150km away from the plant and closer to Tokyo than to the plant. If deer this far away are testing significantly over the limit what does this say about farm animal contamination? Or over all contamination outside of the evacuation zone? Fewer Think Returning Home Is An Option, Namie Officals Still Dream Of Return

[Translate] A recent NHK survey found an increasing number of evacuees think returning home won’t happen or would be extremely difficult to do. Meanwhile officials for Namie, a town 9km from the plant, take periodic readings in the city. They admit that the extremely high levels and only small declines in radiation would make it difficult for people to return. They still hold out hope the government would provide decontamination for the town. How realistic that hope is remains to be seen. Enson Inoue Interview And Visit To Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] Enson Inoue has been traveling to the exclusion zone to feed the abandoned pets and to bring aid to evacuees in temporary housing. His even more notable trip was the one he took inside Fukushima Daiichi. Inoue suited up with some contractors and easily entered the plant complex. He took two dosimeters with him, one outside his Tyvek suit, another inside. “Well those suits aren’t working. They do nothing. If the meter on the outside of my suit was reading 19 micro seiverts or whatever, the one on the inside was reading around 17. The suits don’t do jack s***. They aren’t protecting those workers. I don’t understand how those people are allowed to go in. They have a false sense of security.” He had prepared for his trip into the plant and … Read entire article »

High Levels Of Radioactive Waste Being Allowed In Landfills In Japan

[Translate] The environment minister Hosono has raised the limit on radioactive waste allowed in landfills from 8000 bq to 100,000 bq. This raise the limits, ignore the problem style of dealing with the radiation problems does nothing to solve the situation. It merely chooses to ignore the problem. Meanwhile radioactive sludge is piling up at local sewage plants as no clear plan has been developed to deal with the sludge. The Japan Bar Federation Questions TEPCO’s Story On Worker Leukemia Death

[Translate] The Japan Bar Federation has released a statement questioning the story TEPCO presented to the media surrounding the death of a worker they claimed was unrelated acute leukemia. They state that the potential cause of the workers leukemia should be carefully investigated. The workers history is also not known and TEPCO claimed no effort to find this information would happen. This information about where the worker lived, any previous work at Fukushima or another nuclear plant is critical to determining the exact cause of the worker’s death. The chaotic situation early on in the disaster was also brought up by the Bar Federation, that the worker could have been involved in those efforts. Documentation and dosimeters were not accurately (or at all) implemented during the early months at Fukushima. The Bar … Read entire article »

Extremely Radioactive Mushrooms Found In Fukushima

[Translate] Wild mushrooms with 28,000 bq/kg of radiation were found by the Citizen Radiation Measuring Station in Fukushima. Considering the already high food limit is 500 bq/kg, these are extremely high. Mushrooms are radiation sponges, wild mushrooms in parts of Europe are still off limits due to high radiation from Chernobyl 25 years ago. The Puzzling Hot Spot Evacuations In Date And Minamisoma

[Translate] The Wall Street Journal explores the strange situation of evacuation by hot spot going on in areas outside the 20km exclusion zone. Government officials use a set of two tests in the yard and front door, purposely ignoring areas where radiation concentrates to declare who evacuates. This approach has caused one neighbor to be allowed to evacuate while others left to deal with the situation with no help. Many times the difference in readings are very small leading to more anxiety and confusion. Those told to stay are told to limit their time outdoors, don’t go to parks or the forest. This odd lottery of who gets help and who doesn’t has caused anxiety and strained relations between neighbors. In one bizarre situation, two homes on a family plot that … Read entire article »

Workers Exposed To Penetrating Beta Radiation At Fukushima

[Translate] Two workers and possibly a third were exposed to penetrating beta radiation while changing filters in the water clean up systems at Fukushima Daiichi. They were pulling submerged components and were exposed to 23.4 – 17.1 mSv of radiation. It is not clear what their actual internal dose is, all three are undergoing more tests. In the rush to build decontamination equipment shielding and safe maintenance seem to have been an afterthought and are now causing issues for the workers running the systems. High Radiation Levels Found 100km from Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] The Atomic Energy Agency and Kyoto University used a car equipped with testing equipment and Google Earth to create this visual map of radiation levels. The testing shows even 100km away pockets of high radiation have built up. The terrain and other factors condense radiation in certain areas. The video shows how one area can be relatively safe and another very high, even far away from the plant. NIRS Questionable Iodine Protocol, Some Comparison

[Translate] This NIRS document instructing people about protective iodine contained some puzzling instructions. As a comparison we found a US FDA document on protective iodine in case of a radioactive accident. NIRS suggested only those who fled the exclusion zone after the 19th would need to take radioactive iodine. Reactors were melting down, releasing radiation and exploding before the 19th. People in that area were exposed to radiation. The radiation modeling and currently found levels also show that people outside the exclusion zone were exposed. The document stated that people should only take radioactive iodine once. It also claimed that people would not have any internal contamination. The reason given is that people would not have eaten food stuffs with radioactive iodine in them. The document goes on to claim that people in Japan … Read entire article »

Japan Nuclear Disaster Models From 2002

[Translate] A Japan Atomic Energy Institute paper from 2002 recently surfaced online. This paper was the technical estimations of what would happen if a nuclear reactor on the Pacific coast of Japan were to have a catastrophic accident. The models included radiation dispersal under a variety of scenarios and also illness and death rates under multiple scenarios. The plant for the experiment is  “1100MWe BWR5 with Mark-II type containment– One of the most common plant type in Japan“. Based on the location on the maps included in the paper the reactor used was either unit 6 at Fukushima Daiichi or one of units 1-4 at Fukushima Daini. The scenario is for one reactor failure, not 3 reactor failures plus spent fuel pools as was experienced at Fukushima Daiichi. Of the included reactor scenarios … Read entire article »

Hanford to Fukushima: Part 4

[Translate] This is part 4 of a 4 part series about the Hanford nuclear site in Washington State.  We hope the series will help those in Japan achieve a better understanding of nuclear releases and be able to benefit from the experiences of the victims of Hanford as they deal with their own current circumstances related to the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. Part 4: Hanford Downwiders and exposure People were exposed to radiation a variety of ways around Hanford. During WWII soldiers slept in tents a few miles from the plutonium plants. Beyond the well known air and water exposures, vegetation in the region was contaminated. Fruits and vegetables were contaminated, cows grazing converted the contamination into their milk. Sheep and cows absorbed certain radioactive isotopes into their meat and bones.  This article would not be possible … Read entire article »

Part 3: Hanford cover ups and secrecy At the start of Hanford it was part of the top secret WWII Manhattan Project. The military at Hanford adopted a security system known as compartmentalization. Workers were told only what they needed to know to do their job and purposely did not know anything about other parts of the plant or the work going on. When the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima workers … Read entire article »

Kan To Outline No Go Zones Saturday

[Translate] Kan is scheduled to give a speech in Fukushima on Saturday to give details on the longer term exclusion zone and potential compensation plans for victims. Hints have been thrown around by government sources for over a week that some areas may be very high. They have also stopped just short of admitting some areas may be off limits for generations. This may be the reality that many have assumed since the early days of the disaster, that there will be a no-go zone similar to around Chernobyl. The Japanese government has denied the real risks and the radiation levels for over five months. In the process they have needlessly exposed a large group of people to radiation. Now hints at long term land loss are being put out. There has … Read entire article »
