What The Melted Fuel At Fukushima Unit 1 Looked Like In The Pedestal
[Translate] A recent report by Sandia National Lab indicated that about 140,000kg of melted fuel and debris was released out of the unit 1 reactor vessel. These calculations were part of a larger effort to model the progression of the meltdowns at Fukushima using the known reactor data. “The present analysis shows gross failure at about 14 hours when approximately 140,000 kg of core materials was released to the drywell cavity region” We took those quantities and attempted to visualize what that bulk of melted fuel would look like compared to the pedestal region below the reactor vessel. The rough volume of fuel presented as a total amount gives a better idea how much melted fuel is being dealt with at unit 1. The height range is based on the volume and density range for … Read entire article »

Unit 3 SFP Inspection, Reactor Cap Removed At Unit 4
[Translate] TEPCO has been progressing on work at Fukushima Daiichi to deal with units 3 and 4. The reactor (RPV) cap was removed from the top of unit 4. It appears TEPCO has removed all of the large heavy gear that had been sitting on the top west floor of the damaged reactor building. This removal should help with building stability. This image shows the yellow containment cap, tool pit crane, all of the concrete reactor well plug and the reactor cap have been removed. More images of unit 4′s work can be found in our photo gallery here. The TEPCO handout on the work: handouts_120913_03-e Work at unit 3 involved looking into the spent fuel pool as they prepare to begin removing debris from what is left of the refueling deck. Most of the images were looking … Read entire article »

Hydrogen Increases At Unit 1 Daiichi
[Translate] On September 5th hydrogen concentrations in Unit 1 jumped to .54%, the reading the previous day showed 0% hydrogen for Sept. 4th The 6th showed a .38% hydrogen level, On the 7th hydrogen decreased to .25%. TEPCO made this statement on Sept. 4th: - At 10:30 AM on September 4, in order to examine the case of the intermittent increase in hydrogen density and noble gas (Krypton-85) density measured by Unit 1 RCV gas control system, we injected the nitrogen to the upper part of the pressure suppression chamber in which hydrogen is supposed to be accumulated from the nitrogen injection line laid on the 1st floor of reactor building, and pushed out the accumulating hydrogen and the Krypton-85. We accordingly started confirming the presence of hydrogen and Krypton-85 at the upper … Read entire article »

Workers Exposed To Penetrating Beta Radiation At Fukushima
[Translate] Two workers and possibly a third were exposed to penetrating beta radiation while changing filters in the water clean up systems at Fukushima Daiichi. They were pulling submerged components and were exposed to 23.4 – 17.1 mSv of radiation. It is not clear what their actual internal dose is, all three are undergoing more tests. In the rush to build decontamination equipment shielding and safe maintenance seem to have been an afterthought and are now causing issues for the workers running the systems. TEPCO Releases Document Claiming Unit 3 Blew Up Unit 4
[Translate] TEPCO released a schematic claiming it explains that unit 3 caused the explosion in unit 4. It shows high radiation readings in the exhaust treatment equipment of unit 4 and states that there was a backflow of gas into unit 4. If this is the case and unit 3 had so much hydrogen generating ability that it destroyed two reactors in massive explosions what does that say about MOX fuel safety? Japan Nuclear Disaster Models From 2002
[Translate] A Japan Atomic Energy Institute paper from 2002 recently surfaced online. This paper was the technical estimations of what would happen if a nuclear reactor on the Pacific coast of Japan were to have a catastrophic accident. The models included radiation dispersal under a variety of scenarios and also illness and death rates under multiple scenarios. The plant for the experiment is “1100MWe BWR5 with Mark-II type containment– One of the most common plant type in Japan“. Based on the location on the maps included in the paper the reactor used was either unit 6 at Fukushima Daiichi or one of units 1-4 at Fukushima Daini. The scenario is for one reactor failure, not 3 reactor failures plus spent fuel pools as was experienced at Fukushima Daiichi. Of the included reactor scenarios … Read entire article »

Broken Exhaust Vent After Quake At Fukushima
[Translate] Elaine’s keen eye found this piece of information. The exhaust tower in question is the multiple stack tower near the common fuel storage pool. People might recognize it as the southern tower or the wider one with 4 pipes in it. This image shows the tsunami waters just starting to come into the plant. Yet the vent pipe connection into the tower is severed. Makanaka Blog has all the images of the tsunami rolling in.
