Finding Radiation Free Food In Japan
[Translate] Ex-SKF has a guest post on how one family has figured out how to find safe food for their children in Japan. Certain food coop distributors are taking the extra effort to test the food they source or to find sources known to be outside the contamination areas. This is some valuable information for anyone worried about their food safety. William Marcus, the guest blogger who wrote the article also observed that using some of these safer food options comes at a premium. The cost of buying from one of these coops that is testing is 10-20% higher than normal grocery stores. He also noted that people have observed that many from the Tohoku and Kanto regions with resources are leaving. “I was in Kyushu for a week last week, visiting in-laws and … Read entire article »

Their detecting equipment from Germany can test for cesium and iodine in food products the public can bring in and pay a small fee to have tested. From the Nikkei Shimbun article about the new testing center. “Those who wish to bring a certain amount of food and soil samples. To measure yourself while you operate the unit under the guidance of Becquerel Center. One measurement time is 15 minutes. 1,000 yen fee is 20 becquerel types lowest detectable amount. Citizen Created Radiation Map Of Tokyo
[Translate] People in the Tokyo area have compiled their radiation readings into a crowd sourced Google Map. The map has detailed instructions in the comments about how the samples were tested and how citizen contributors should do so. The project began back in mid-May. Citizen crowd sourced projects like this enable people to have a better understanding of their true risk and serve as a fact check on government reports. CRIIRAD Gives Workshop To Train Citizens In Radiation Testing
[Translate] French NGO CRIIRAD presented a workshop in Yokohama to show interested citizens how to test food for radiation contamination. Children Nationwide shared images on their Facebook page and announced they are attempting to set up their own lab in Yokohama. The equipment needed is quite expensive, the local group will commence fundraising soon to buy their own equipment. As soon as we hear about that effort starting we will share the fundraising information. NIRS Questionable Iodine Protocol, Some Comparison
[Translate] This NIRS document instructing people about protective iodine contained some puzzling instructions. As a comparison we found a US FDA document on protective iodine in case of a radioactive accident. NIRS suggested only those who fled the exclusion zone after the 19th would need to take radioactive iodine. Reactors were melting down, releasing radiation and exploding before the 19th. People in that area were exposed to radiation. The radiation modeling and currently found levels also show that people outside the exclusion zone were exposed. The document stated that people should only take radioactive iodine once. It also claimed that people would not have any internal contamination. The reason given is that people would not have eaten food stuffs with radioactive iodine in them. The document goes on to claim that people in Japan … Read entire article »

Low Level Radiation Exposure LNT Model, An Explanation
[Translate] By Dean Wilkie The linear no-threshold model (LNT) is a method for predicting the long term, biological damage caused by ionizing radiation and is based on the assumption that the risk is directly proportional to the dose at all dose levels. In other words, the sum of several very small exposures have the same effect as one larger exposure. The LNT model therefore predicts higher risks than either the threshold model, which assumes that very small exposures are negligible, or the radiation hormesis model, which predicts the least risk by assuming that radiation at very small doses can be beneficial. He used to be a professor of Nagasaki University, and also the director of Nagasaki Univ International Hibakusha Center. This is a reason Fukushima residents and other JP citizens believed what he said during the early stage of the incident.) Purpose of the project: To reduce fear and worry among residents about effects of radiation. To follow health status of residents for the long time. Target population: All Fukushima residents who live in Fukushima at the March 11. Please leave your notes in the comments. Anyone with editing access can then grab out of comments and organize into groupings as needed. General info on radiation levels and exposures: Estacion saves the day! Thanks for the conversions. 0.10 Gy = 0.10 Sv = 100 mSv = 1000 uSv, for X-ray, Gamma ray or beta radiaton 0.10 Gy = 2.00 Sv, for alpha particles ——– Radiation absorbed dose (rad) Under exposure a given material has an ability to absorb radiation. This differs with certain materials (think lead versus water) and some will absorb more or less as radiation passes through. The difference between types of radiation
[Translate] Radiation from nuclear accidents is frequently expressed by the media as “just like an x-ray” or “equivalent to an x-ray”. This comparison is grossly incorrect. Many times internal exposure will be again, incorrectly compared to an x-ray. These faulty comparisons give the public a false sense of security. The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War have an excellent paper that clearly explains the differences between medical diagnostics and a nuclear accident. Coping With Radioactive Contamination; How To Protect Yourself
[Translate] Food/consumption: Hygiene: Hygiene is important, keep food in sealed containers, indoors. Keep food preparation surfaces clean and free of dust or dirt. Clean produce well and peel any root vegetables. Do not keep or consume food in places where dirt and contamination could be blown onto the food. Avoid hand to mouth gestures when hands may be dirty or in an area more prone to contamination like outdoors. Washing hands before food preparation, eating or smoking can help.
