Nuclear Energy: So Safe Jellyfish Can Throttle Entire NPPs

[Translate] As if the current onslaught by Mother Nature on nuclear power plants in Fukushima and Nebraska wasn’t enough, and in case the fire threatening the United States’ oldest nuclear laboratory (and largest nuclear weapons repository) didn’t get our attention, two current stories on Reuters are almost comic relief. From June 29, 2011: An invasion of jellyfish into a cooling water pool at a Scottish nuclear power plant kept its nuclear reactors offline on Wednesday, a phenomenon which may grow more common in future. Novel Temporary Water Storage Solutions At Daiichi NPP; SimplyInfo.org Urges TEPCO Adoption

[Translate] Research Team: Peter Melzer Dean Curtis Nancy Foust Elaine Kirk   As of June 20, 2011 the nuclear power plant at Fukushima Daiichi is estimated to be one week away from exhausting all water storage at the power plant. The water decontamination system being implemented on site is experiencing ongoing challenges as the plant staff tries to trouble shoot a system created from parts by disparate vendors. This is a difficult and time sensitive problem. The growing concern is that highly contaminated water will need to be released into the sea. Previous releases both intentional and unintentional have already created a significant problem for sea life, plants and concentrations found on the sea floor. More releases should be avoided if at all possible. This article would not be … Read entire article »

Large Ground Fissure Found Near Unit 1 Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] SimplyInfo.org researcher Elaine Kirk found this image that was posted on the TEPCO website on June 14th of Unit #1 at Fukushima Daiichi. It shows a very large and deep fissure that runs right up to the reactor building. It is unclear what date the image was actually taken on. The odd quality of the image is due to it being some sort of laser survey of the power plant.
