Tropical Storm Talas Update

[Translate] Thanks again to Thunder for providing today’s Talas update: The track has jumped around a little in the last 24 hours, firstly west and now has migrated eastward again a little, models having problem pin pointing what an upper level trough will do in regards to the steering ridge, that is the steering ridge is like a wall of high pressure air, the trough is an elongated area of low pressure, the trough will make a hole in the wall through which the system can pass- weaker trough more western crossing, stronger trough more eastern crossing). JTWC current forecast map about the same as 24 hours ago(now over Kinki instead of Tokai-a little more westerly) the intensity forecast has changed a little too but nothing too major to warant discussion. Workers Exposed To Penetrating Beta Radiation At Fukushima

[Translate] Two workers and possibly a third were exposed to penetrating beta radiation while changing filters in the water clean up systems at Fukushima Daiichi. They were pulling submerged components and were exposed to 23.4 – 17.1 mSv of radiation. It is not clear what their actual internal dose is, all three are undergoing more tests. In the rush to build decontamination equipment shielding and safe maintenance seem to have been an afterthought and are now causing issues for the workers running the systems. France Calls For International Nuclear Response Team

[Translate] The French PM called for an international nuclear crisis training center and ways to cooperate on safety and standards. He also called for an international crisis team. In light of all the time and negotiating it took just to get needed equipment like pumping cranes and robots, this is an overdue idea. We previously mentioned a Chernobyl survivors group who is asking for the same changes. From the Bloomberg article: “Fillon today called for “convergence” on safety standards around the world through structures such as the crisis management mechanism, which could be overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency. “After Fukushima we have to reconsider every way we manage crisis,” he said. “Governments must protect their populations.”” Hindsight is always 20/20. An international ready team is a good idea as is more international cooperation. … Read entire article »

North Anna Nuclear Plant Quake May Have Been Beyond Safety Design

[Translate] The North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia experienced a power loss after an earthquake hit the eastern US. A number of things have caused concern about the North Anna plant including statements that the earthquake did not trip the reactors into automatic shutdown. The power plants seismic monitoring equipment was sent off to the manufacturer for analysis. The initial and mid-term analysis both state that the quake was beyond the design basis for the plant. “Following the event, seismic data was retrieved from the installed monitoring system and shipped to the vendor to determine the response spectrum for the event. On August 26, 2011 at 1340 hours, initial reviews of the data determined that the seismic activity potentially exceeded the Design Basis Earthquake magnitude value above 5 Hz.” No word yet if the … Read entire article »

High Radiation Levels Found 100km from Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] The Atomic Energy Agency and Kyoto University used a car equipped with testing equipment and Google Earth to create this visual map of radiation levels. The testing shows even 100km away pockets of high radiation have built up. The terrain and other factors condense radiation in certain areas. The video shows how one area can be relatively safe and another very high, even far away from the plant.
