Date City Official Accuses Residents Of Acting Like Victims, Not Cleaning Up TEPCO’s Mess
[Translate] This may be one of the top “bonehead” statements of the ongoing disaster in Japan. “An official from Date City explained the situation in the city, saying “Even when we explain how to decontaminate to the residents of the city, they have this victim mentality of “TEPCO should do it”, and they don’t cooperate readily.” Date City is one of the areas that had rice over the government radiation limit. The ICRP are there experimenting with attempts to decontaminate fruit trees. Of course people who had their land, homes and livelihoods damaged or destroyed by a massive nuclear accident courtesy of TEPCO may feel like victims because they are victims. From Dictionary.com: vic·tim noun 1.a person who suffers from a destructive or injurious action oragency: a victim of an automobile accident. 2.a person who is deceived or cheated, as by his or her ownemotions or ignorance, by the dishonesty of others, or bysome impersonal agency: a victim of misplaced confidence; thevictim of a swindler; a victim of an optical illusion. 3.a person or animal sacrificed or regarded as sacrificed: warvictims. 4.a living creature sacrificed in religious rites. Expecting the people injured or who had damage inflicted upon them to clean up the mess made by TEPCO is ridiculous. There have been many … Read entire article »

Spent Fuel Worldwide Unsolved Problem
[Translate] The New York Times recently ran a piece proclaiming the issue of spent nuclear fuel as a major problem. The US has 104 operating nuclear power reactors. There are 439 power reactors operating worldwide, they provide only 6% of the world’s power. The US reactors alone produce 2000 metric tons of fuel each year. As of 2009 the US alone had produced about 64,000 metric tons of spent fuel. A 2009 estimated said the planned (and now scrapped) Yucca mountain storage facility would have hit it’s 70,000 metric ton capacity by 2010. Currently no country has a permanent storage facility for nuclear fuel waste. A few are exploring the idea at various underground locations. In Germany the Castor waste transports have been generating weeks of massive and sometimes violent clashes with … Read entire article »

Japan Protests From Hamaoka To Germany
[Translate] Protesters (about 4000) joined hands to form a human chain around the highly controversial Hamaoka nuclear plant in Japan today. The protesters are demanding the permanent shut down of Hamaoka, the plant sits on a dangerous fault line. The plant’s reactors are currently on temporary shutdown by order of the government. Meanwhile in Germany the Castor nuclear transports are being heavily protested with people of all kinds joining in to delay the shipment. Japanese protesters joined in and spoke at a rally in the German city of Dannenberg. Kanako Nishikata and her two children along with an organic farmer all from Fukushima, spoke at the rally. A contingent of German and Japanese media reporters followed the group. Nishikata was impressed by the organization of the rallies and hoped Japan could have that … Read entire article »

Japan Adopts High End Of ICRP Standard, Calls It “International Standard”
[Translate] In the ongoing debate and confusion around safe radiation standards a detail in the ICRP manuals is being overlooked. The ICRP sets 1-20 mSv/year as the range for a post accident scenario. It also states that this is for emergency situations and not to be used as a long term benchmark. The ICRP goes on to say that governments should develop much lower long term standards that are towards the low end of the ICRP range. There was much international outrage with the Japanese government increased the acceptable exposure level for children to 20 mSv/year. They eventually brought it down to 1 mSv/year but the levels for adults appears to still be set at 20 mSv/year. Neither of these is intended to be long term exposure standards but brief emergency standards. The … Read entire article »

The Ongoing Nuclear Skirmishes In Germany
[Translate] Large numbers of people in Germany continue to do everything possible to block the Castor nuclear waste shipments. The people bring tractors, ingenuity and improvised tools to slow down the train and to protect themselves from police tear gas and other tactics. Gas masks, goggles, home made riot shields and protective suits are common gear. One group set fire under a rail section causing it to become completely unusable. The Castor casks will have to be transferred and travel the last 30km by truck down the one available road. Below are more images and videos of the Castor protests. California Tries TEPCO’s Failed Doom & Gloom Tactic When Faced With Nuclear Shutdown
[Translate] The California Legislative Analyst’s Office made the claim recently that if the two remaining nuclear power plants in California were shut down the state would cause rolling blackouts and other chaos. This is in reaction to a proposed ballot initiative that would force California’s two nuclear power plants to shut down until a permanent disposal site for high-level nuclear waste is approved by the federal government. With Yucca Mountain scrapped by the current administration no such facility exists or is in the works in the US. The two reactors in California San Onofre and Diablo Canyon only supply 16% of California’s electricity according to the Analyst’s report. The situation in Japan over the summer where TEPCO declared major conservation would be needed to avoid blackouts constituted 25% of the region’s power supply. Over the … Read entire article »

Seismologist Predicted Fukushima
[Translate] Seismologist Katsuhiko Ishibashi spent two decades warning of the high risk of a major earthquake and a resulting nuclear accident in Japan. He even wrote a book. That book caused his superiors to force him to apologise to the Construction Ministry. He eventually lost his job over his predictions. One plant Ishibashi says is of particular risk is Tsuruga nuclear power plant. Tsuruga sits on Lake Biwa, a major fresh water source in Japan. Residents recently filed suit trying to shut down Tsuruga, citing the risk to the water supply. Ishibashi isn’t the first person to warn of the high risk of earthquakes vs. nuclear plants, or the sloppy safety standards at Japan’s nuclear power plants. Katsunobu Onda, author of TEPCO: The Dark Empire (東京電力・暗黒の帝国) told that for TEPCO and the government to admit that … Read entire article »

Government Admits Some Will Never Return Home, Considers Buying Land
[Translate] The Japanese government is considering buying the land in areas where the contamination is the worst. The more important comment is the admission that many will never be able to return home. In addition it was made public that decontamination efforts in Fukushima are largely not working. What may be effective in areas of much lower or spotty contamination is not working to effectively decontaminate homes in Fukushima. Initially people evacuated were told they would only be gone a few days. Many left their pets at home and likely many other things important to their lives. They were told repeatedly by the government that they would return home “very soon”. Then there was the admission by Prime Minister Kan on his way out that some may be unable to return home for … Read entire article »

80% Of Japan Nuclear Power Plants Now Shut Down
[Translate] With the Takahama nuclear plant shut down for maintenance, 80% of Japan’s nuclear power plants are now offline. 44 of Japan’s 54 nuclear power plants are now shut off. Fukui prefecture said they will not approve a restart without a new set of safety standards. Fukui is home to 11 nuclear plants. Between the needed approval of local governments, stress tests and decisions by METI, restarts of these reactors is not a sure thing. The permanent shut down is not guaranteed either. Reuters has been keeping an ongoing tally of what reactors are offline. TEPCO Claims Landowners Are Responsible For Contamination Clean Up
[Translate] TEPCO claims landowners are responsible for contamination clean up Laughable? Shocking? Insane? Maybe all three. A TEPCO lawyer made the claim as part of the court case brought against TEPCO by golf course owners for damages to their business. Luckily the judge rejected the idea. The idea that landowners should be responsible for cleaning up the mess TEPCO distributed all over a good swath of Japan has not gone over well with the public either. It has been quickly spreading across twitter and other social networks today. The property in question is the radioisotopes spewed from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. This debris originated from the nuclear fuel owned by TEPCO. The TEPCO lawyer handling the case also tried to dismiss extremely high radiation readings as being inaccurate. Some areas of the course … Read entire article »

Massive Protests And Blockades Of Nuclear Shipment In France And Germany
[Translate] People from all walks of life and age groups in Germany and France are protesting the Castor nuclear shipments from Valogne France to Gorleben Germany. Farmers blockade tracks with farm equipment and lifestock. Protesters chain themselves to the tracks in large numbers to block or at least delay the shipment to make it as difficult as possible in a clear sign that the public does not support the nuclear power policy their countries have thrust upon them. Over the 1000 km journey people wait as word of the trains trip gets out. Areva does not announce the exact date and time the train will leave in the hopes to avoid protesters. While some of the protest points are relatively peaceful others are rather aggressive clashes with police. The shipment this time carries … Read entire article »
