Byron NPP Outage Update – New Details, Still No Power

[Translate] Still no offsite power by 6am CST at the Byron nuclear power plant that lost power early yesterday. Officials are blaming something in the switchyard but no specific equipment or cause has been cited yet. The unit 2 reactor continues to run on its emergency diesel generator. Our team has been researching the plant trying to pinpoint equipment and potential causes. Byron has had previous issues with their offsite electrical system and have been cited repeatedly by the NRC. Byron is served by 3 incoming power sources, what piece or pieces of equipment failed. In 2000 Byron had similar problems with the offsite power system including a loss of offsite power. The redundant systems and incoming lines are supposed to prevent a total loss of offisite power, yet at Byron it appears … Read entire article »

Byron Nuclear Plant Loses Offsite Power, Tritium Leaks In Venting Steam

[Translate] Earlier today the Byron nuclear power plant near Rockford IL lost all offsite power to unit 2. The unit scramed and diesel generators took over. Unit 1 continues to have offsite power, at this point unit 2 appears to be still on emergency diesel generators. Smoke was seen near a transformer for unit 2 but dispatched fire fighters did not find evidence of a fire. Excelon energy, the plant’s operator, vented steam from the non-nuclear side of the plant to attempt to cool the reactor down faster. This steam contained detectable tritium but an amount has not been declared. At the time of posting this Byron had been on emergency diesel generators for over 8 hours, offsite power went down at 10:18am. US reactors are currently required to have only 4 … Read entire article »

Spent Nuclear Fuel Dilemma; Strategies Around The World

[Translate] The problem of what to do with all this spent nuclear fuel has frustrated every country that has a nuclear power program. With the US upcoming public meeting on spent nuclear fuel tomorrow we are taking a look at what is being done in various countries. This is an international problem. All nuclear countries should be looking at what has worked and what has not worked as we try to find solutions. Germany: Germany thought they had a suitable site for their nuclear waste. The Gorleben salt dome was chosen largely for political purposes. It was in a lightly populated area near what was the East German border at the time. The technical requirements of the site quickly fell apart. It has a gas deposit below it. Removing the deposit would cause … Read entire article »

Sunday Fukushima Roundup

[Translate] The mothers protesting on METI’s front lawn in Tokyo have not been evicted. The declined the request to leave and a rather huge crowd showed up at eviction time to support them. Tokyo police decided not to do anything due to the crowd. The national government rejected the Fukushima Governor’s request for free healthcare for anyone under 18 living in Fukushima. Now the governor is considering spending money intended for decontamination and health surveys for the plan. Many have criticized the plan as a pressure tactic to try to get families with children to stay in the area. Maybe the governor could spend those funds evacuating children to somewhere safe? TEPCO took second place for worst company in the world in an international poll. They only lost by about 800 votes. Mitsubishi Electric … Read entire article »

Fukushima Exposes The US Faustian Deal On Spent Nuclear Fuel

[Translate] The US currently has about 63000 tons of spent nuclear fuel, most of it still stored in unprotected cooling pools in reactors. After the Fukushima Daiichi disaster showed how dangerous spent fuel pools that are frequently outside of any hardened containment are, the issue of spent fuel in the US became a major concern. It was not only obvious that these spent fuel pools pose a major radiation risk in an accident, fuel pools in the US were even more crowded than the ones in Japan due to a process of double racking. Early on in the US nuclear power program the spent fuel issue was hoped to some day be solved by fast breeder reactors or reprocessing but even those technologies leave considerable high level nuclear waste that still must … Read entire article »

Japan Realizes They Don’t Need Nuclear Power

[Translate] Japan is now down to 3 operating nuclear reactors. With an estimated 30% of their electricity coming from nuclear power there were considerable concerns about meeting the power demand. Last summer Japan instituted conservation measures after blackouts were predicted, no blackouts happened.  Now with the shut down of all of Japan’s nuclear reactors pending by this spring, METI minister Yukio Edano is saying that they will not need to institute conservation measures this summer to survive without nuclear power. This includes not needing to implement a 15% reduction demand on large energy consumers. It was discovered this summer and again over the winter that the power companies had been overestimating numbers to make the power demand look much higher than it actually is. It also came out recently that 2012 predictions for … Read entire article »

Now There Are 3: Shimane Unit 2 In Shutdown

[Translate] Shimane unit 2 in Japan’s Shimane prefecture went into periodic shutdown today. This leaves 94% of Japan’s reactors shut down with 3 remaining. Reports from Japan are that currently life is pretty normal and conservation measures (of those still in force) are not noticeably disrupting life. METI To Evict Mother Protesters From Office Lawn Today – Take Action Here

[Translate] METI has decided to evict the group of mothers who have been peacefully camping in front of the ministries Tokyo office for months. Minister Edano has decided to evict this group 4 months into their 10 month and 10 day protest. This comes on the heels of METI kicking the public out of public meetings on nuclear reactor restarts. METI stopped listening to the public, now they want to take it out on a group of mothers doing a peaceful protest. Avazz has organized a form you can use to contact METI’s office to ask them to stop the eviction.  Beyond Nuclear has gathered contact information for METI: An emergency press conference will be held on January 27th at 1pm at the Japan Federation of Bar Associations’ Building, Room 1006. US Nuclear Industry Skyrockets Price Last Minute For Equipment At Height Of Fukushima Crisis

[Translate] Of course the nuclear industry is there to lend a helping hand when their equipment goes horribly wrong.. but it will cost dearly. On March 19th while workers in Japan were still trying to regain control of the reactors at Fukushima, US nuclear mega-corp Bechtel was busy trying to make a healthy profit. USAID was attempting to coordinate the delivery of an emergency pumping system from Australia to Japan. At the last minute Bechtel jacked the price by an ADDITIONAL $8,850,000.00 USD. USAID did not have that much money and asked the NRC to assist in figuring out the problem. The 4 train seawater system was supposed to cost $750,000 USD, Bechtel increased the price to $9,600,000. Adding to the irony, the NRC was at the same time talking about how the US … Read entire article »

The People Vs. The Power Company

[Translate] This problem is global. People end up fighting a huge company and frequently their own government for knowledge, safety and compensation for damage. The new documentary Atomic States of America looks at the community of Shirley, New York on Long Island and how they slowly realized the Brookhaven National Lab was far from a good neighbor. The lab had been conducting atomic experiments and had a number of accidents and leaks. The community discovered the high number of rare cancers clustered around the lab but met with everything from resistance to outright mockery for trying to get answers out of Brookhaven. Kelly McMasters, a journalist that grew up in Shirley was able to access the library at Brookhaven and found evidence of not just a multitude of accidents and leaks but a … Read entire article »

Then There Were 4, Soon To Be 3

[Translate] TEPCO shut down a reactor at Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant. This leaves 4 nuclear reactors operating in Japan. On the 27th of January the #2 reactor at the Shimane nuclear power plant will shut down for maintenance, leaving 3 in operation. The three that remain are: Kansai Electric – Takahama No.3, 870 MW – Planned maintenance from February 20, 2012 Tokyo Electric – Kashiwazaki-Kariwa No.6, 1,356 MW – Planned maintenance from March 10, 2012 Hokkaido Electric – Tomari No.3, 912 MW - Planned maintenance from April-May 2012   This article would not be possible without the extensive efforts of the SimplyInfo research team Join the conversation at chat.simplyinfo.org All content is copyright SimplyInfo.org. Establishment Politics Oblivious To Change Happening In Japan

[Translate] While the establishment political parties in Japan keep on with business as usual the people seem busy making change all around them. Osaka saw a new governor and mayor running on an independent “restoration association” platform that aimed to end nuclear power and work for related needed changes. Now that group has larger ambitions to field 300 new candidates for the national Diet with a goal of obtaining 200 seats. The youngest ever female mayor was recently elected to the capital city of Shiga prefecture. She ran as an independent against the 70 year old male incumbent. This makes Shiga prefecture the only one to have both a female governor and mayor.  Ms. Koshi graduated from Hokkaido university before attending Harvard and working as a lawyer in the US. Political commentators … Read entire article »

Frontline Episode on Fukushima & Nuclear Safety Misses On Details

[Translate] PBS show Frontline recently did an episode “Nuclear Aftershocks” on the Fukushima nuclear disaster and US nuclear safety. The feedback after the premiere on Twitter wasn’t very kind. Many weighed in dismissing the entire piece as “pro-nuclear propaganda”. The information in the show itself was not necessarily a PR piece for the nuclear industry as some on Twitter complained but it did have a few missing important details and some miss-statements that were misleading. Before going more into the show, the “show” after the premiere on Twitter was probably more enlightening than the show itself. Under the #frontline tag on Twitter people were encouraged to discuss the show but what people encountered on Twitter was a flurry of PR propaganda from the nuclear industry lobby group NEI, Areva and Entergy. US Nuclear Power Is Only 9% Of Power Generation Total

[Translate] The US Energy Information Administration, released their findings for 2010 that show only 9% of US power consumption capacity was provided by nuclear power.  This flies in the face of the constant claim by nuclear industry lobby groups that the total is 20%. This 20% claim always comes with the claim that the US can’t survive without nuclear power. The same thing the people in Japan were told after Fukushima, while power companies threatened widespread blackouts that never happened. It also came out today that the Japanese government withheld information that showed they were overestimating 2012 power consumption predictions. This omission made it look like Japan would have a 10% shortfall the summer of 2012 when in fact they will not. Instead they will have a 6% surplus. This manipulation … Read entire article »

People Fighting The System As Nuclear Disaster Continues To Spread

[Translate] With less than two months until the anniversary of the quake, tsunami and nuclear accident, the scope of the radiation contamination continues to grow as does the frustration of people with what seems to be an utterly tone deaf government. EX-SKF talks about the slow rude awakening of people in Japan as they realize their government is indifferent to their plight and safety. NISA held a public meeting on the stress tests and restart of the Oi nuclear reactor. This was a public meeting but when the public did anything other than sit quietly in their seats the meeting was stopped and the police were called. NISA tried to paint the disruption as a small group of disrupters bursting into the meeting but IWJ an independent media outlet in Japan was … Read entire article »
