Human Impact Of Fukushima Nearly A Year Later

[Translate] Nearly a year since the massive  disaster in Japan, people struggle to get life back to something resembling normalcy. Misunderstanding, stress and fighting a system that doesn’t work well add to the challenges people face. A 60 year old worker that died suddenly was declared a case of “overwork” by the labor authority in Japan. Nobukatsu Osumi had a heart attack on his first day of work at the plant. He was tasked with working on pipes at the waste disposal facility. The press report does not state what his radiation levels were. This is the first case of a Fukushima worker’s death being investigated by the labor ministry.  The article also does not state if the family will receive compensation now that his death is officially attributed to his work at … Read entire article »

TEPCO’S Road Map Includes Hints At Reactor Damage

[Translate] TEPCO’s decommissioning road map explains how they intend to dismantle the plant. It also includes many hints at where TEPCO thinks the units may be damaged. TEPCO’s plan for fuel removal is loosely based on the removal done at Three Mile Island. The two situations are quite different as with TMI the fuel did not melt through the reactor. What is apparent reading the road map is the huge challenges ahead. There are many things TEPCO wants to do but they will need to create the technology to do it with. The longer roadmap document in Japanese here. English shorter version here. We have also listed all of the reactor radiation maps under Fukushima Status or they can be found directly here. The illustration below shows where TEPCO assumes leak paths are. They think the … Read entire article »

Mitsubishi Knew San Onofre Steam Generator Had Cracks Before It Shipped.

[Translate] Mitsubishi knew the steam generator for San Onofre that failed recently had cracks in it before it shipped to the US. The article doesn’t detail if there was some sort of “within tolerences” level for cracks or if this would have been cause to not use the unit. The unit was later found to have a failed process used to prepare the pipe ends. The other unit at San Onofre had the same problem. Could the cracks have been a warning sign of the improper end installation? Mitsubishi isn’t saying. Unit 2 Quince Expedition Analysis

[Translate] Quince 2 made a trip into Unit 2 and successfully made it back out. A series of images were taken on the refueling floor that give hints at both the condition and the accident at unit 2. The refueling floor  looks largely unscathed. Work equipment still sits on top of the concrete reactor cap. Work boots sit neatly in a row nearby and tarps are still in place from whatever was being done when the quake hit. Levels inside unit 2 were considered too high for workers to enter. This set of notes in the timeline gives hints to the time an nature of failures at unit 2: “This is when the cap leaked: • At between 6:00 and 6:10, a large explosive sound occurred. At almost the same time, the pressure of the … Read entire article »

TEPCO To Scope Unit 2 Again

[Translate] TEPCO plans to scope unit 2 again using the same location. Workers will make the attempt in late March using an 18 meter scope. The previous attempt used a 10 meter scope. They will also include a radiation detector on the end of the scope for the new attempt. TEPCO hopes to get a better view of the water level in unit 2 with the longer scope as the previous attempt did not determine water levels. Who Really Runs Japan?

[Translate] Business groups have been pushing their influence on the Japanese government. Industries agenda may find itself in direct conflict with the people. Both of Japan’s major political parties have cowed to industry pressure to resume nuclear reactors. “Politicians are quietly lowering anti-nuclear colors raised following the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant as Japan prepares for a second summer of energy shortages and a major debate over restarting suspended reactors. Under intense pressure from the business world to ensure stable energy supplies, officials of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan are leaning toward allowing the resumption of reactors taken off the grid for periodic inspections. Meanwhile, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party on Feb. 15 released an interim report on nuclear energy policy that effectively put off forming a definite policy … Read entire article »

Nuclear Industry Asked Govt. To Downplay Tsunami Risk Days Before 3-11

[Translate] Tokyo Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co. and Japan Atomic Power Co. asked the Japanese government Earthquake Research Committee to rewrite the language about the tsunami risk to Fukushima and Myiagi prefectures just days before the March 11 disaster. The nuclear power companies wanted the report rewritten to give the impression the Jogan quake and tsunami of 869 didn’t happen or was still being studied for validity. Rewriting history is cheaper than making nuclear plants safe. Huge Data Influx On Fukushima

[Translate] A large number of reports and documents have been coming out in the last few days about Fukushima. This may be due to the one year anniversary coming up. USGS released a report of US fallout. It showed some contamination in the west coast, north central US and some spots on the east coast. Why it took almost a year for the US public to be informed of this information has yet to be explained. Even with the long delay in releasing the information, USGS has been far more forthcoming with information than the NRC has been. IAEA has released a new report on Fukushima. The report covers a number of recent issues including concerns about unit 2, environmental impact and their view of TEPCO’s current actions. NRC recently released transcripts from their … Read entire article »

Unit 2: Something Is Going On – Visual Diagrams Of Daily Changes

[Translate] Both NISA and the IAEA think there is enough of a chance that something is going on inside unit 2 that they have asked TEPCO to create alternative ways of measuring temperatures. IAEA also mentioned that the manner in which sensors fail does not match some of the behaviors seen on sensors in unit 2, hinting that sensors labeled failed may not be. In order to help understand what is going on inside unit 2 we have developed some visual diagrams of daily readings that bring together data from various documents. The position along the horizontal plane for each sensor is labeled with a degree if it is known. Others are marked as close as possible to the structure or known landmark for location of that sensor. Water rates, pressure, and … Read entire article »

Japan Reactor Stress Tests Mired In Confusion

[Translate] A variety of parties are involved in the review of stress tests on idled reactors intended to prove safety leading to the restart of reactors in Japan. Stress tests are to be done in two phases with the second phase being much more in depth. So far no reactors have done second phase tests. NISA has approved first phase stress tests on two reactors at the OI nuclear plant. NISA’s abrupt approval sparked public outrage as did NISA’s response of throwing the public out of public meetings on the issue. The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan is questioning the abilityto determine safety based on first phase stress tests alone. The NSC has also said they would leave the decision to the government about restarting reactors: “Madarame said, “Whether to reactivate (reactors) is the government’s decision and we, … Read entire article »
