TEPCO announced hiring Lake Barrett, a former US DOE nuclear guy that had some involvement in the partial clean up of the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster. TEPCO is touting it as proof they are serious about getting outside help. Sadly, Barrett appears about as useful as TEPCO’s “secret weapon” Lady Judge.
Barrett penned a very long letter that published in The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists yesterday. The bulk of the letter praises TEPCO, tries to drastically downplay the disaster and blames the public for their oh so troublesome “fear” as being the real problem at Fukushima. In the letter Barrett makes one lone suggestion for dealing with the water problems at Daiichi, using welded tanks.
Three Mile Island is nothing like Fukushima Daiichi and to date PR has never solved a nuclear disaster. Barrett at least would be expected to possess some useful technical knowledge but that doesn’t seem to be what TEPCO is interested in.
