A previous well publicized study on butterfly mutations in Fukushima has seen a follow up study published. The initial study looked at butterflies in the wild. This caused some criticism that this could have allowed other environmental factors such as temperature to impact the condition of the specimens. The follow up study used all specimens collected from Okinawa and raised in a laboratory setting. The specimens were highly controlled to remove any outside influence, then fed a specific diet consisting of contaminated plants from Fukushima Prefecture.
The control specimens had the lowest abnormality and mortality with the specimens from the highest contaminated plants and areas showing considerably higher. While there wasn’t a direct linear dose response it did show a clear difference between the heavily contaminated areas plants vs. the control and also Hirono, the area of lower contamination. The study found quantifying an exact dose to each butterfly pupae to be a challenge but the over all superficial result of the study is quite clear.
