IRID reports progress on the new robot that will be used to attempt to look inside the reactor pedestal of unit 2 at Fukushima Daiichi. The tiny robot would be fed in through the X6 pipe penetration in the containment vessel wall onto the control rod drive rail and into the pedestal.
Earlier investigations into the containment structure of unit 2 showed that the control rod drive rail was missing in the last section as it enters the pedestal. There was also evidence of high heat and possible splatters of corium (melted fuel) around this opening. A pipe will be inserted to over come the gap and allow the robot to travel into the pedestal. The goal is to than drop it onto the grating inside the pedestal. What was not mentioned is what would be done if the grating is no longer there or too damaged for the robot to travel along the surface.
IRID currently reports the actual work inside unit 2 would happen in the first half of fiscal year 2015.
