Work to install the muon scanners at Fukushima Daiichi unit 1 should be underway by February 2015. A number of research projects leading up to this have been taking place. These include efforts to determine the proper amount of shielding required so the detectors can function at the plant among the high levels of radiation and test scans of a functional reactor at Tokai.
With both of these projects done, the first installation is planned for unit 1 at Daiichi. The angle and placement of the detectors is of interest with one being at ground level on the north-east corner of the building and the other being at an angle on the 2nd floor of the turbine building. This gives a direct view across the reactor and containment but avoids the extremely high radiation area around the unit 1-2 vent stack.
