IRID published a call for proposals mid June related to research and development into a way to reinforce the torus structures of the damaged reactors. Toshiba is in charge of overseeing the project and assigning the research contract.
Based on documents posted by Toshiba the work would involve creating a plan, design and 1/4 scale model of the concept. The requested work is to create bracing to shore up the lower portion of the torus tube and both sides at locations around the suppression chamber (torus). The request also mentions leak repair on the torus tube.
The related handouts from Toshiba mention the project is in relation to the concept of filling the containment structure with water for removal of fuel debris. IRID’s newest report shows that they are moving away from the idea of flooding the containment structure and would focus on dry removal technology. So it is unclear why they would go ahead with this torus repair research if the flooding concept is no longer considered viable.
Toshiba is not forthcoming about the torus tube leaks or the outcome of any of the ongoing investigations at Fukushima Daiichi.
