Fukushima rice will be available for sale in the UK starting in July. It will also be supplied to some restaurants in the city.
News reports gloss over the radiation risks. Foods tested in Japan only have to meet the 100 bq/kg for cesium 137/134 in order to be sold. Any food products below that threshold are considered legal to sell. This is an intervention limit. It is not a guarantee of “safety”. This system allows contaminated foods into the food supply as long as they are below the intervention limit. Frequently the actual contamination levels are not published, or only some of a food crop is tested in a spot testing method. As was found in Tawian, many times Japanese foods are not tested at all before being exported to other countries. Mixing of contaminated crops with those of lesser or no contamination is also not currently banned in Japan. The rice being exported from Fukushima is a variety called Ten no Tsubu.
Japanese food importers, TK Trading UK will be the importer and distributor of the rice. They appear to be a retailer and distributor of imported food products.
One high end restaurant in Japan specifically mentioned in the news reports is Tokimeite that will be serving the rice.
