The first inspection of the unit 1 spent fuel pool has been conducted. Workers found visibility of about 7 meters underwater using a camera on a boom. They were able to identify the spent fuel racks in the pool along with some debris on top of the racks. It was also discovered that cables from the fuel handling crane were draped down into the pool. This may cause problems for the installation of the floating air mattress type cover for the pool. This floating cover is needed to protect the pool and its contents from falling debris as the remains of the damaged refueling floor are removed.
Cables draped down into the spent fuel pool from the underside of the fuel handling crane.
The yellow box in the above photo is labeled “channel detachable machine”. This isn’t clear if it is a cable, the portion of the fuel handling crane that reaches down into the pool to retrieve fuel or something else. The upper portion of the photos shows a cable in the water.
Items on the right labeled with “CR” are the control rod racks and used control rods. Debris can be seen on top of the fuel racks below.
Control rods can be seen stored on the right. The white dotted line indicates the location of a spent fuel rack. Debris can be seen on top of the fuel rack. This is the first photo of the fuel inside the spent fuel pool.
The above diagram shows the photography directions with red arrows. CR is the stored control rods on the pool wall. The loop near the water line indicates the location of the cables. The far left object is indicated to be “channel detacher” but does not clarify what this object actually is.
The above diagram shows the photography location from above.
The above diagram shows the photography boom along with a photo of the equipment.
The spent fuel pool will eventually require debris removal as has been done previously at unit 3 to facilitate the removal of fuel. This work will take place after the rest of the building debris removal above the pool is completed. TEPCO did not indicated that this inspection changed any scheduled work at unit 1.
