Unit 3 Receives New Turbine Building Cover

The unit 3 turbine building suffered roof damage during the 2011 explosion at that reactor. A temporary cover had been installed soon after to prevent rainwater infiltration before typhoon season. As part of long term work to reduce the amount of contaminated water on site, new remediation work has been conducted.

Contaminated debris on the roof of unit 3’s turbine building was removed. This is cited as reducing the radiation levels before further work took place. A weir was installed around the hole in the unit 3 turbine building roof and now a membrane sheet cover has been installed to assist in preventing future rainwater intrusion.

Remote device used to vacuum small debris from the turbine building roof. This device was suspended from a crane.

Prior to this work the backwash valve pit in the seafront area was filled with concrete. Debris removal and the placement of roof block and sand was implemented on the turbine building roof. After the weir was installed on the roof a gutter and a rainwater purification device was installed. TEPCO did not elaborate on the purification device.
