Ukraine Nuclear Plant Threatened By Russian Army

Reuters is reporting that the Russian army is near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine and that they have rockets pointed at the plant. Fighting in the area escalated over the weekend, coming closer to the 6 reactor plant, one of the largest in the world. Russian troops invaded the exclusion zone around Chernobyl and as of Saturday, it appears they are still holding the plant’s essential workers hostage and not allowing them to leave. A message relayed to Clean Futures said they were not allowed essential medications or food.

Earlier on Sunday, reports of rockets being fired from Belarus, aimed at Kyiv appear to be being launched over the exclusion zone and Chernobyl site area.

All of this risks a direct hit on high-risk facilities. This also increases the risk for an accident due to loss of offsite power, damage to the water system used to cool reactors and spent fuel, and the inability to bring in needed equipment staff, or fuel. Staff left pinned down at the plant unable to leave risk higher levels of fatigue increasing the potential for accidents, or becoming unable to work if they run out of food or other essential supplies.
