Daily News Roundup – August 19, 2011

There was a 6.8 earthquake earlier today near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The strong earthquake was caught on video. Data analysis of potential quake damage is forthcoming.

Children from the devistated region met with government officials urging them to provide a safe environment for them. The responses from the government were silence or vague statements that they will “do their best”. The main request from the children was to be evacuated to somewhere safe.

A former US state department official admitted the US considered pulling out part of the forces currently in Japan soon after the crisis at Fukushima Daiichi began.  This came on the heels of the admission that the US considered evacuating 90,000 US citizens in Tokyo. Early in the disaster the Japanese government was not forthcoming to the US about the the crisis at the plant. The US began flying drones over the plant to collect data. The results of that information caused concern among US officials.

A group of NGOs has sent a petition to the UN Commission on Human Rights demanding intervention in the crisis in Japan

The inaction of the government is taking a psychological toll on the residents of the region.
