Population Exodus From Tohoku Region Of Japan

The areas around the Fukushima Daiichi disaster and areas that received higher radiation fallout have seen major population shifts. The government numbers are thought to be lower than the actual number of people leaving as they are based on people who officially file a change of residence form.

Chiba saw their population drop as young families moved away and people did not move to the area to replace those that left.

Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi all saw people leaving in considerable numbers, these don’t always include those in temporary housing or are living in a different town in the same region due to high radiation levels. An estimated 43,000 is a conservative number of official moves from the Tohoku region.
