Byron Nuclear Plant Outage Caused By Failed Insulator

An insulator failed and fell off in the electrical equipment at Byron Nuclear Plant. Chicago Tribune reported that an insulator in the switchyard failed then fell off causing the unit to lose all offsite power.
The insulator may be replaced by some time Tuesday. No estimate on returning offsite power or a reactor restart.

UPDATE: There were also some water pumps that failed at Byron when the power went out. Redundant pumps were available but this has caught the attention of the NRC as abnormal operation. This is now part of the special investigation going on at Byron by the NRC.
