Anti-Nuclear Activist Jellyfish Attack Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant

Update: Ron D pointed out that this makes California currently nuclear free. San Onofre is currently shut down due to the two failed steam generators. The remaining unit at Diablo Canyon was also shut down today leaving California with no operating nuclear power plants. To get an idea of the current power demand in California check out this report. Ron also pointed out that had this been the hot months of summer there could have been a considerable power shortage in southern California.

Tiny jellyfish called salps have swarmed the water intakes of Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in California. One unit was shut down this week for refueling. The other unit was taken down to 25% capacity due to the jellyfish attack. The jellyfish were found Monday, the refueling outage was begun later in the week. Jellyfish attacks on nuclear plants are quite common frequently causing plants to shut down or lower operating rate.
