Japan Requires Filtered Reactor Vents, US Still Refusing To
Japan’s new nuclear regulator the NRA has announced they will require filtered vents on all BWR reactors. Installation would be required before any reactor restart would be considered.
Meanwhile in the US the NRC is still trying to decide on implementing the safety feature. The US NRC is under immense pressure from the US nuclear industry to not mandate the safety filters. The industry has gone far enough to call in favors in congress, prompting a number of congresspeople who received large political donations from nuclear power companies to attempt to pressure the NRC into not doing any safety changes post Fukushima.
Meanwhile Europe has had these vent filters of a standardized design since the 1980′s.
