Japan To Set Up Fallout Shelters For Residents Living Near Nuclear Power Plants

[Translate] Japan’s nuclear regulator has announced the need for 50 fallout shelters for residents living near nuclear power plants. Some of Japan’s nuclear plants are built on peninsulas. Residents living on these peninsulas would be unable to flee during a nuclear disaster since they would have to drive near the plant to escape. The solution? Fallout shelters. Public buildings like schools would be retrofited with air handling systems and blowers to attempt to remove radioactive substances before people enter. There were no specifics given what the alternative plan is if these facilities are destroyed or damaged by an event like an earthquake or tsunami. Black Stuff Mystery Gets Stranger, Is Magnetic, We Look Into What It Is

[Translate] The ongoing mystery of the black stuff gets another twist. Someone in Minamisoma took a sample and separated it with a sieve. The larger pieces had about 50 uSv while the fine matter had 100 uSv. The fine matter is also slightly magnetic. This raised the obvious question of what could it be to be radioactive and magnetic. This is the detector used in the video. The video here. We looked at a number of possible substances. Some are paramagnetic. This type can be influenced by heavy magnets under certain conditions but probably not the manner seen in the video. A household magnet generally can’t attract a paramagnetic substance. Our team has been researching the past 2 days trying to determine potential sources for the substance and have run through a long list of possibilities. We also … Read entire article »

What If Fukushima Happened In The US?

[Translate] NDRC has created a US map showing what would have happened if a reactor in the US had a major meltdown on March 11, 2011. They use the weather data available for the US on that date to create plume paths. A couple of things to keep in mind. Many US nuclear plants have fewer reactors than Fukushima Daiichi, thus creating smaller plumes. The plume drawn in the US maps is just the worst of the plume. As was seen after Fukushima Daiichi began to release radiation that significant contamination emanates far from the dense plume shown on these maps. Looking at the close proximity of US reactors on the east coast and the idea of multiple meltdowns is enough to send someone into the fetal position.  Also, a meltdown at Prairie … Read entire article »

Government Releases New Radiation Readings In Fukushima

[Translate] The government has released new radiation readings for the region of Fukushima near the nuclear plant. Levels in the color chart over the “blue” level match the .5 uSv/h threshold for evacuation at Chernobyl. The orange and red zones are banned entry for an “extended period”. Alaska Official Lies About Fukushima Fallout

[Translate] An Alaska Public Health Official recently made the claim that Alaska did not receive any detectable fallout from Fukushima. “He said radiation sensors in the state confirm Alaska didn’t receive a detectable dose of radiation” Pierce, the official quoted makes his claims off the Anchorage station that is not included in EPA air filter data but goes in to claim that this applied to Fairbanks, Juneau, Dutch Harbor and Nome. We know this to not be true. There were detectable levels of isotopes clearly from the Fukushima disaster over Alaska. Dutch Harbor saw a spike of a wide variety of radioactive isotopes from March 19-22. Juneau saw a spike of the same spectrum of isotopes on March 22nd & 23rd. Nome saw a similar spike on March 24th. The isotopes included were iodine 131, iodine … Read entire article »

MEXT Creates Interactive Radiation Map

[Translate] MEXT has created an interesting interactive radiation map. It allows you to look at various regions using different types of monitoring. It could be improved by adding the aerial testing of the western half of the country and possibly some of the on the ground testing results but is still useful as is. Radiation Survey Map Shows Widespread Contamination

[Translate] The science ministry has been working on an aerial survey of Japan to document the total contamination. We reported earlier about levels in Gunma, Chiba and Saitama that were higher than the contamination levels at Chernobyl. The map ends abruptly at the prefecture borders showing moderate to high levels of radiation near the edges. More prefectures previously thought to be safe will likely show with higher than anticipated radiation levels. Officials Failed To Notice Iodine 131 Cloud Floating South Of Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] Officials from the science ministry are now saying that another cloud of radiation flowed south of the plant. It has been well known of the fallout path that flowed north and west of the plant. The south fallout path was prior to June 14th based on testing results. This could help explain the unexpectedly high radiation readings citizens have been obtaining. Officials said the amounts of iodine 131 were rather high but didn’t give figures. There was also no explanation why it took them until mid-September to release this information. Another Radiation Model Shows US & Canada Received Significant Fallout

[Translate] University of Kyushu has published a paper and their model of radiation fallout from Fukushima Daiichi. This model shows the same as the French CEREA models, that considerable amounts of radiation reached not just the US west coast but large portions of the US and Canada. The various models from different groups all show the same thing, that the US and Canada received significant doses. The US EPA told the public that there was nothing to worry about, nothing going on. The EPA was supposed to have new radiation data out in August, currently no new reports or data have been released.  HT to EX-SKF who has been tirelessly following the disaster on his blog.  From the Kyushu model for March 21.   This article would not be possible without the extensive efforts … Read entire article »
