Fukushima Year 2; Part 3
[Translate] This is part three of our three part series on the second year of the 3-11 disaster. In part three we look at the humanitarian issues, the environmental damage and how people are adapting since the disaster. Human Costs 300,000 remain displaced from their homes. Some from the tsunami damage, others from the nuclear disaster. The original estimate for the nuclear related evacuation was 160,000. Some are in apartments, others in tiny temporary housing units. An unused school in Saitama is still home to a group of senior citizens with nowhere else to go. Those who have taken up residence in the school will never be able to return home. All come from Futaba, very near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Futaba may not be habitable again for a generation at best. (1)(2)(3) The … Read entire article »

Yamashita Admits Exaggerating Safety Of Being In Fukushima
[Translate] Dr. Yamashita became world famous after the Fukushima nuclear disaster when he proclaimed 100 mSv to be a safe level of radiation exposure. His even stranger statement that “Radiation doesn’t affect people who are smiling” sparked outrage. This is the man in charge of the Fukushima radiation exposure survey, currently almost the only way residents can obtain data about their exposure or thyroid damage. Now Dr. Yamashita has admitted he exaggerated the safety of the situation in Fukushima. He admitted that ICRP radiation standards were valid, they show a much lower exposure to risk level than Yamashita has been promoting. He admits his statements added to the anxiety and distrust among the public and contributed to the discrimination towards those trying to take proper safety measures for their families. Ongoing Health Care For Firefighters Who Battled Fukushima
[Translate] The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has established a system to provide ongoing health care and health checks for firefighters who battled the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Firefighters from Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki and Osaka battled the meltdowns during the first days of the disaster at the plant. If the agreement is formally adopted they will receive health checks for leukemia and cataracts even into retirement. The program would start with obtaining body radiation counts and go on to cover early screenings for known health effects. There is also speculation that SDF forces who also assisted with the disaster may be covered by such a plan. Still no word about any similar coverage being provided by the government for the workers that have battled the disaster since March. Health Ministry To Give Fukushima Workers Free Annual Cancer Screening For Life
[Translate] The Health Ministry in Japan has decided any worker exposed to over 100 mSv will get free yearly cancer screenings for life. To date 99 workers have hit that level of exposure. Those who were exposed to 50 mSv or higher will qualify for annual cataract screenings. The ministry is attempting to create a database of all workers along with their contact information in order to track their ongoing health. There was no word how any of this would relate to potential occupational compensation for their potential health problems. Yamashita No Longer In Charge Of Radiation Protection Program in Fukushima
[Translate] Dr. Yamashita has been causing all sorts of confusion, anger and distrust since he was appointed to run the Radiation Protection program in Fukushima prefecture. The doctor made a number of disastrous public statements including his claim that 100 mSv was safe. Yamashita later reversed on this opinion. Yamashita is a research scientist who has studied the victims of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Chernobyl, but he has no public health experience and is not a medical doctor. Dr. Yamashita has been removed as the person in charge and reassigned to being a research advisor to the new 5 member panel appointed to run the program. Japan Nuclear Disaster Models From 2002
[Translate] A Japan Atomic Energy Institute paper from 2002 recently surfaced online. This paper was the technical estimations of what would happen if a nuclear reactor on the Pacific coast of Japan were to have a catastrophic accident. The models included radiation dispersal under a variety of scenarios and also illness and death rates under multiple scenarios. The plant for the experiment is “1100MWe BWR5 with Mark-II type containment– One of the most common plant type in Japan“. Based on the location on the maps included in the paper the reactor used was either unit 6 at Fukushima Daiichi or one of units 1-4 at Fukushima Daini. The scenario is for one reactor failure, not 3 reactor failures plus spent fuel pools as was experienced at Fukushima Daiichi. Of the included reactor scenarios … Read entire article »

Low Level Radiation Exposure LNT Model, An Explanation
[Translate] By Dean Wilkie The linear no-threshold model (LNT) is a method for predicting the long term, biological damage caused by ionizing radiation and is based on the assumption that the risk is directly proportional to the dose at all dose levels. In other words, the sum of several very small exposures have the same effect as one larger exposure. The LNT model therefore predicts higher risks than either the threshold model, which assumes that very small exposures are negligible, or the radiation hormesis model, which predicts the least risk by assuming that radiation at very small doses can be beneficial. Doctors Raise Concerns About Radiation Exposures, Radiation Found In Local Residents
[Translate] Doctors throughout the devistated region are warning of a larger public health problem due to radiation exposure. Doctors in Chiba are seeing persistant nosebleeds and other symptoms they think are connected to radiation exposure. The experts from medical and academic facilities warned that raising radiation limits would only increase the exposures and risks to the public. There has also been an over reliance by the Japanese government on ICRP radiation standards. The ICRP’s standards have been extensively criticized for being out of line with other standards and current research. The ICRP is also heavily funded by agencies tasked with the promotion of nuclear power like the NRC. Contamination has also been found in local residents urine. The people tested live 20 – 30km from the plant. Two month exposure rates were as … Read entire article »

Japan NSC Rejected Plan To Collect Fukushima Workers Stem Cells
[Translate] In April, 2011 a group of experts and related professional groups urged all workers to have stem cells collected before they began work at Fukushima Daiichi. These banked stem cells could be life saving if a worker or workers were exposed to large doses of radiation. Back in April the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan rejected the calls for stem cell collection claiming there was “no need”. The Lancet published the original paper in April of 2011 calling for stem cell collection. The Lancet published another paper on August 6th, 2011 where Piero Dalerba urges authorities in Japan to take the advice of the original paper and collect worker stem cells. Dalerba goes on to suggest a preventative treatment of bisphosphonates to act as a preventative measure against stronium 90 absorption. This second paper … Read entire article »

Plutonium Risks To Health
[Translate] Googleによる日本語訳は、記事の一番下に翻訳。 Plutonium is a radioactive isotope that is produced inside a nuclear reactor. Plutonium that was released into the environment during the nuclear accidents at Fukushima Daiichi can be extremely dangerous. Plutonium-239 is produced from the decay of Uranium-239 and has at least 15 different isotopes (most common Pu-238, 240, 241, 242) all of which are radioactive and have varying half lifes (Pu-239 is highest at over 24000 years). All of these plutonium isotopes can be dangerous if they enter the body. The difference between types of radiation
[Translate] Radiation from nuclear accidents is frequently expressed by the media as “just like an x-ray” or “equivalent to an x-ray”. This comparison is grossly incorrect. Many times internal exposure will be again, incorrectly compared to an x-ray. These faulty comparisons give the public a false sense of security. The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War have an excellent paper that clearly explains the differences between medical diagnostics and a nuclear accident. Radiation Showing Up In Urine Of Children Outside Tokyo
[Translate] We recently wrote about the high radioactivity being found in soil and at locations around Kashiwa, Chiba (suburb of Tokyo). Today another parent posted the urine test results of their child, the family also lives in Kashiwa. The tests showed notable levels of internal cesium contamination in the child’s body. Initially the GoJ told people in the Tokyo area they were totally safe. The evidence is piling up that this was simply not true.
