Fukushima Year 2; Part 3

Yamashita Admits Exaggerating Safety Of Being In Fukushima
[Translate] Dr. Yamashita became world famous after the Fukushima nuclear disaster when he proclaimed 100 mSv to be a safe level of radiation exposure. His even stranger statement that “Radiation doesn’t affect people who are smiling” sparked outrage. This is the man in charge of the Fukushima radiation exposure survey, currently almost the only way residents can obtain data about their exposure or thyroid damage. Now Dr. Yamashita has admitted he exaggerated the safety of the situation in Fukushima. He admitted that ICRP radiation standards were valid, they show a much lower exposure to risk level than Yamashita has been promoting. Ongoing Health Care For Firefighters Who Battled Fukushima
[Translate] The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has established a system to provide ongoing health care and health checks for firefighters who battled the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Firefighters from Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki and Osaka battled the meltdowns during the first days of the disaster at the plant. If the agreement is formally adopted they will receive health checks for leukemia and cataracts even into retirement. The program would start with obtaining body radiation counts and go on to cover early screenings for known health effects. There is also speculation that SDF forces who also assisted with the disaster may be covered by such a plan. Health Ministry To Give Fukushima Workers Free Annual Cancer Screening For Life
[Translate] The Health Ministry in Japan has decided any worker exposed to over 100 mSv will get free yearly cancer screenings for life. To date 99 workers have hit that level of exposure. Those who were exposed to 50 mSv or higher will qualify for annual cataract screenings. The ministry is attempting to create a database of all workers along with their contact information in order to track their ongoing health. Citizen Food Testing Laboratory To Open In Chiba In October

Yamashita No Longer In Charge Of Radiation Protection Program in Fukushima
[Translate] Dr. Yamashita has been causing all sorts of confusion, anger and distrust since he was appointed to run the Radiation Protection program in Fukushima prefecture. The doctor made a number of disastrous public statements including his claim that 100 mSv was safe. Yamashita later reversed on this opinion. Yamashita is a research scientist who has studied the victims of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Chernobyl, but he has no public health experience and is not a medical doctor. Japan Nuclear Disaster Models From 2002
[Translate] A Japan Atomic Energy Institute paper from 2002 recently surfaced online. This paper was the technical estimations of what would happen if a nuclear reactor on the Pacific coast of Japan were to have a catastrophic accident. The models included radiation dispersal under a variety of scenarios and also illness and death rates under multiple scenarios. The plant for the experiment is “1100MWe BWR5 with Mark-II type containment– One of the most common plant type in Japan“. Based on the location on the maps included in the paper the reactor used was either unit 6 at Fukushima Daiichi or one of units 1-4 at Fukushima Daini. Low Level Radiation Exposure LNT Model, An Explanation
[Translate] By Dean Wilkie The linear no-threshold model (LNT) is a method for predicting the long term, biological damage caused by ionizing radiation and is based on the assumption that the risk is directly proportional to the dose at all dose levels. In other words, the sum of several very small exposures have the same effect as one larger exposure. Doctors Raise Concerns About Radiation Exposures, Radiation Found In Local Residents

Japan NSC Rejected Plan To Collect Fukushima Workers Stem Cells
[Translate] In April, 2011 a group of experts and related professional groups urged all workers to have stem cells collected before they began work at Fukushima Daiichi. These banked stem cells could be life saving if a worker or workers were exposed to large doses of radiation. Back in April the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan rejected the calls for stem cell collection claiming there was “no need”. The Lancet published the original paper in April of 2011 calling for stem cell collection. The Lancet published another paper on August 6th, 2011 where Piero Dalerba urges authorities in Japan to take the advice of the original paper and collect worker stem cells.
