Unit 1; Post Quake Reaction & Torus Oddity Indicate Larger Problem
[Translate] We have reported extensively about a phenomenon going on inside unit 1 since the accident. Whenever there is a strong quake, the radiation in the Drywell B sensor goes up considerably, pressure and other readings tend to also fluctuate in unison. After the initial meltdowns these reactions were quite intense. Now 1 year and 9 months into the disaster we still see this same activity. The recent 7.3 quake at Fukushima caused this same reaction. Drywell B radiation went from 2.99 to 4.71. Swings up into the 3′s or low 4′s happen but the high 4′s was unusual. One pressure sensor jumped from .1417 to .1420 post quake then settled back down. As has always been the case the suppression chamber radiation readings do not go up post quake. Inspections of the … Read entire article »

7.3 Quake In Sendai; Round Up Of Key Information & Daiichi Reports
[Translate] UPDATE: 3:45am GMT Dec 8th; USGS scientists say this may be part of the aftershocks from the March 2011 big quake. UPDATE: Worker Happy11311 spoke to someone working at Fukushima Daiichi today. He conveyed that things on the ground did not appear to be abnormal and that no malfunctions were found during the time and location his work group was in the plant. There were also obvious concerns expressed by Happy about the ability of the plant to deal with more quakes. UPDATE: TEPCO is now stating they will do an inspection of the sea side area near units 5-6 today. They cite no new findings for Fukushima Daiichi. They did add an item for Fukushima Daini. Unit 1 Fukushima Daini began to see pressure increase the building by 0.05 kPa. The containment … Read entire article »

Officials – Piping At Fukushima Unit 5 Has Insufficient Quake Resistance
[Translate] Officials have admitted that unit 5 at Fukushima has pipe and support systems that did not meet 2006 anti-quake standards. This includes the main water supply pipes to the reactor. Anti quake standards were raised in 2006, TEPCO acknowledged the increased risk to the reactors but did no reinforcement work. They also did not submit any test results showing the reactors were compliant as is. Apparently TEPCO simply did nothing about the 2006 standards changes. This is in step with our findings of work done in response to the 2007 earthquake at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa. TEPCO was told by NISA to do earthquake upgrades. What was done was highly superficial items like some small tank tie downs and a rail in the control room. In 2007 no work was done to piping … Read entire article »

Quake Causes Leak At Fukushima Unit 4 Spent Fuel Pool
[Translate] After the New Years Day quake in Japan all appeared normal at Fukushima Daiichi. Now Japanese Media is stating there is a problem with unit 4′s spent fuel pool. It is leaking somewhere connected to the skimmer tank next to the spent fuel pool. The skimmer tank is losing water five times faster than it normally does due to evaporation. Kyodo News is saying the tank is dropping 8cm per hour. Unit 4 is the reactor with the heavily damaged structure and the spent fuel pool that was concerning officials that it might collapse. Reinforcement work to the pool was completed late this summer but is still of concern that it could be damaged by subsequent strong earthquakes. This particular fuel pool has a complete reactor load of new spent fuel in … Read entire article »

2012 Starts With A Bang, A Quake And A New Scandal At Fukushima
[Translate] 2012 didn’t waste any time being interesting. An unusually widespread quake hit Japan about 2pm New Year’s day. The quake was a 7.0 on the richter scale and about a 4 on the shindo scale in many locations. Many people in Japan said the quake was extremely long. Peter Melzer explains the intensity scales and compares to some recent quakes. An interesting comparison, the US east coast quake this summer was a 5.9 richter but a 6 higher on a shindo scale. The Japan quake on New Year’s was a 7 richter but about a 4 shindo in most places. Details on the quake at Japan Meteorological Agency. The quake was very widespread. It shook the far north island of Hokkaido, the north east area of Honshu, down past Tokyo and … Read entire article »
