Issues At Fukushima Daiichi And More Nuclear Changes In Japan
[Translate] Denki Shimbun raises concerns about the delays in the new ALPS water decontamination system to be used at Fukushima Daiichi. The NRA has asked for further safety standards for the system before they give operation approval. This has added to the growing list of delays for the new system. Not mentioned in the Denki Shimbun article is the extensive delay after TEPCO discovered the sludge storage containers would catastrophically fail if dropped. The water problem at Fukushima Daiichi continues to grow. The current delay puts full decontamination of the current water on site at 1.5 years. Japan To Close 3 Nuclear Plants Or Another Campaign Game?
[Translate] The current government in Japan has declared they will shut 3 older nuclear reactors in Japan at the Mihama and Tsuruga nuclear plants. A bit further into the story they admit they won’t actually be making this decision it will be up to the new nuclear agency that takes over this week. So the decision isn’t really a decision or their decision… The three reactors are past their 40 year shut down dates and all sit above a crush zone making them more prone to quake damage. Mihama unit 1 is 320MW Mihama unit 2 is 470MW Tsuruga unit 1 is 357MW These are tiny compared to newer nuclear reactors that come closer to the 1000MW range. Active Faults May Doom Japan’s Nuclear Reactors
[Translate] NISA has ordered owners of the Oi and Shika nuclear plants to inspect faults that run under their reactors in Japan. Experts have been pressing for almost a month that certain fault lines may be active and that Oi should be stopped. Now NISA has caved to public pressure to do something. Based on current media reports it appears the power companies will be left to inspect the faults themselves rather than in cooperation with experts in the field or NISA officials. The Impending US Nuclear Disaster
[Translate] The US and their aging reactor fleet has been the subject of much discussion including the safety of running these old plants far past their original lifespans. The issue of the massive stockpile of spent nuclear fuel has been discussed more post-Fukushima. The NRC’s current plan appears to be storing casks in nuclear power plant parking lots for 200 years. This long term problem that has recently become an even more urgent problem isn’t the only nuclear mess the US is facing. Each power plant is required to set up a trust fund that they put rate payer money into for future decommissioning costs. 80% Of Japan Nuclear Power Plants Now Shut Down
[Translate] With the Takahama nuclear plant shut down for maintenance, 80% of Japan’s nuclear power plants are now offline. 44 of Japan’s 54 nuclear power plants are now shut off. Fukui prefecture said they will not approve a restart without a new set of safety standards. Fukui is home to 11 nuclear plants. Between the needed approval of local governments, stress tests and decisions by METI, restarts of these reactors is not a sure thing. The permanent shut down is not guaranteed either. UK Nuclear Reactor Construction Haulted, Large Problems With The Program
[Translate] EDF has announced they will stop the planned construction of 4 reactors in the UK. They cited problems at the Flamanville EPR reactor and re-evaluating the conditions in the UK. We previously wrote about the massive technical and construction failures of the EPR reactor at Flamanville here. Citibank had warned investors back in 2009 of the economic viability of new nuclear programs in the UK, stating they were simply not profitable. Now the UK government is announcing that the UK taxpayers will be stuck with the 100 million pound cost to decommission the British Nuclear Fuels failed MOX plant. Mayor Of Tokai, Shiga Residents Take Action To Shut Down Reactors
[Translate] The mayor of Tokai is calling for all reactors at the Tokai plant nearby to be decommissioned. Tokai holds 12 nuclear reactor related facilities and was the location of the first reactor in Japan. The mayor made his point clear in these comments. “Looking at how Fukushima has been handled, I’ve realized that Japan isn’t capable of controlling the massive science and technology of nuclear power. Fukushima Prefecture Adopts Petition To Decommission All 10 Nuclear Reactors
[Translate] The prefecture assembly has adopted a petition to force the decommissioning of all 10 nuclear reactors in the prefecture. All 10 are owned by TEPCO and include the units at Fukushima Daiichi and Daini. The decision would end any hopes TEPCO had of restarting units at either plant. Foreign Ownership Blocks Approval Of 2 US Nuclear Plant Projects
[Translate] The new reactors at Calvert Cliffs have been stopped and new reactors planned at a Texas project may end up stopped if some very smart Texas groups have their way. Thousands Sign NRC Petition To Suspend Fukushima Style Design Nuclear Reactors
