TEPCO To Build Real Sized Reactor Model To Determine Fuel Removal Plan

[Translate] TEPCO plans to build a mock reactor in Fukushima to work out issues related to removing fuel and dismantling the reactors. The facility will include a to scale model of the GE Mark 1 containment system used at Fukushima Daiichi. The facility will also be the basis for developing the robot technology needed to conduct the work. Both the government and TEPCO will be working on the project. NHK doesn’t say where it will be built but a worker at the plant hinted it may be in Nahara. TEPCO’s New Meltdown In Tokyo

[Translate] Last week TEPCO announced at a press conference that they would be unable to build the underground wall hoped to block some of the water infiltration and leaking at the plant. TEPCO’s current worry about the plan is that it would create a situation where the highly contaminated water in the reactor buildings could flow out. There was an earlier plan mentioned where they would create some sort of underground clay walls around the reactor buildings to stem the movement of water. It was not clear if this idea has also been ruled out. TEPCO commented at the press conference “We wish anyone could suggest any good idea in this discussion.“ The same week TEPCO makes the rather strange claim that the pond of highly radioactive water that was leaking considerably, … Read entire article »

Miyagi Residents File Claim Radiation Exposure, The Data Behind The Issue

[Translate] Radiation doesn’t respect borders. People living in parts of Miyagi along the plume path from Fukushima Daiichi experienced worse conditions than many in Fukushima did but have been denied any assistance. Marumori Town and the Hippo district were among the areas where contamination was high. A group of people from the area have now filed a claim against TEPCO for compensation. The area in Miyagi received a significant plume on March 20th as we previously reported. There are also some known discrepancies with the monitoring stations in the area where many were placed too high up to be accurate representations of living conditions. A multitude of food products and soil have been showing as considerably contaminated in the area. Rice in the area was found to be double the government radiation … Read entire article »

TEPCO Withholds “Black Box” Data About Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

[Translate] In April of 2010 TEPCO signed a contract with high tech security company Magna BSP to provide a sophisticated video and trespass detection system  at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. This was the first installation of what was to be a series of similar installations at nuclear plants around Japan, coordinated between the government and nuclear operators. The system was installed at Fukushima Daiichi in 2010 Two TEPCO workers who were trained on the system weeks before the disaster were confirmed to have been among the Fukushima 50 who stayed at the plant during the worst of the disaster. To date TEPCO has not acknowledged the existence of the system or volunteered any of the video and data captured by the system to the public or the press. This data was never … Read entire article »

TEPCO Sells Off Real Estate, Still Loses 7 Billion USD

[Translate] TEPCO recently announced they lost about 7 billion dollars in 2012. As part of the restructuring of the company they were ordered to sell off assets. It appears that has been going on yet it didn’t make a considerable dent in the company hemorrhaging money. They have planned to sell of 247.2 billion yen in real estate in the 3 years following the disaster. This equals about 2,492,270,400.00 USD Sources: http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/gourika/index-e.html http://www.tepco.co.jp/gourika/baikyaku-j.html http://www.tepco.co.jp/gourika/12shisan1-j.html This article would not be possible without the extensive efforts of the SimplyInfo research team Join the conversation at chat.simplyinfo.org All content is copyright SimplyInfo.org. TEPCO’s Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Plant Unlikely To Restart, Why This Matters

[Translate] A TEPCO report now admits the faults under all of the reactor units at their Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant are active. According to the new NRA reactor safety standards this would make a restart of any unit there impossible. This has huge implications. The government bail out of TEPCO involved a restructuring plan that had one plan, restart Kashiwazaki Kariwa and use those funds to cover TEPCO’s costs for the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. Everything has been hung on the hope of restarting their other nuclear plant. TEPCO has also spent a considerable amount of money retrofitting the Kashiwazaki Kariwa plant. Filtered vent systems have been installed, flooding mitigation work and additional equipment have been purchased. All of this work may have been wasted money. With TEPCO’s restructuring plan dependent on what … Read entire article »

Sisyphus With A Paper Cup; TEPCO’s Enormous Water Problem

[Translate] The contaminated water problems at Fukushima Daiichi have been plaguing the plant since day one. In recent months the problems have once again shown themselves to be too much for TEPCO to deal with while the plant continues to contaminate the environment. TEPCO stated that they were again, out of space only to find space after it became apparent the government would not allow them to dump contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. This is something TEPCO has asked to do repeatedly since 2011 when they dumped contaminated water into the Pacific on top of what has been leaking. Contamination and contaminated water from the failed reactors is still making its way out of the plant a number of ways, all with long term major implications for the environment and public … Read entire article »

Rats Vs. TEPCO, The Rats Are Winning

[Translate] TEPCO’s new arch nemesis, the influx of rats that have taken up residence at the plant, are causing more problems. Two rats were found dead inside the electrical equipment being used to power unit 2′s spent fuel pool cooling system. This time it didn’t knock out power to the system but did require the cooling system be shut down for most of a day to work on the electrical box. TEPCO cleaned out the box and applied some sort of putty or foam around the entry point of the wires. Unless this material has steel wool or something similar in it to deter rats or mice from chewing, it may not be an effective solution. The IAEA recently inspected the plant, declared nothing of substance and suggested TEPCO continue to handle the disaster … Read entire article »

Strontium 90 Will Contaminate Coastal Groundwater In 10 Years

[Translate] Strontium 90 found to be leaking out of the ponds installed by TEPCO is expected to contaminate the coastal groundwater near the plant in 10 years. Kyodo News cites the NRA for this statistic. Certain ponds at the plant held the backwash sludge water from the reverse osmosis system, adding to the high levels of contaminants in the water. Fukushima & Nuclear News Roundup April 21,2013

[Translate] Japan Steel is struggling, their stocks declined and some workers are being given partial furloughs. Their nuclear parts business is cited as the cause for the corporation’s decline. The head of Japan Steel is also a key member of Japan’s business federation that has been screaming for nuclear power restarts since soon after the disaster. You should be able to deduce their motivation. The NRA is giving the Oi reactors in Kansai an interim inspection to see if they meet the new reactor safety guidelines. Some of the failures at Oi such as a proper seawall, filtered vents and a quake proof command center are not completed but NRA seems to have carved out enough waivers they might pass and be allowed to operate until September. Families are being lured to have … Read entire article »

Fukushima Daiichi Technical Update Report

[Translate] TEPCO has begun pumping water out of the number 2 pond at the plant to above ground tanks. TEPCO cites the decision due to this tank leaking the most. Water is being moved at 20 tons per hour. Radiation levels around the number 2 pond have been rising. In a TEPCO report some work done on the power system for the unit 2 spent fuel pool is cited. TEPCO used pink plastic sheeting to make what they classified as small animal protection. TEPCO apparently does not understand rats and mice do not see plastic sheet as a challenge. TEPCO found extremely high radiation levels and plutonium concentrations in the port. The areas directly near the reactor intakes had been concreted over to try to keep radiation levels down. The areas where the … Read entire article »

Water Leaks At Daiichi Expose New Widescale Failures At TEPCO

[Translate] The extent of the problems at Fukushima Daiichi has come to light in the past few weeks as multiple failures ended up in the news. NRA is expressing their concern. The NRA head commented that the water situation at Daiichi is on the verge of collapse but that there is no choice but to keep adding water to the reactors. A recent Japan Today article cites the reason for TEPCO’s design choices for the storage ponds was cost, they were cheaper. Maeda, the company that built the ponds blames TEPCO’s design choices for the problem and declared that TEPCO drew up the plan, not Maeda. There have also been questions raised why TEPCO chose what was a landfill design for solid waste debris for ponds intended to hold contaminated water. TEPCO … Read entire article »

TEPCO To Remove Water From Ponds By June

[Translate] TEPCO announced a big press conference to be held out at J Village. So far the only report out of this event is that TEPCO has announced they will remove all of the water from the ponds by June. This came with obligatory bowing by TEPCO executives. The journalists that had to travel out to J Village for this must have been thrilled to have to go all the way there for something that could have been done in Tokyo.   A government industry minister has said he will make TEPCO move all pond water into above ground steel tanks. Strontium has been detected outside the number 1 pond   Antimony and Ruthenium were also found outside the number 1 pond. Other readings for the pond are under analysis. TEPCO also released this rough … Read entire article »

More Problems Come To Light At Fukushima Daiichi

[Translate] More information has come out today in relation to the pond failures and leaks at Fukushima Daiichi. Third confirmed pond leaking but all are leaking We documented the issue of all of the ponds leaking yesterday based on TEPCO’s reporting. Asahi Shimbun has come to the same conclusion today. TEPCO has admitted to the press that a third pond is leaking. Now the number one pond is leaking according to TEPCO. This is the pond that has been receiving water from the number two pond where the first leak was declared. The NRA has asked TEPCO to monitor the leaks and to prevent the water from flowing off the premises. This appears to be the extent of NRA’s involvement in the pond construction and ongoing oversight of them. TEPCO claims water may not leak … Read entire article »

TEPCO Cites 6 Years For Total Property Loss

[Translate] Six Years For Total Loss On Fukushima Properties TEPCO has admitted a time frame for total loss on property claims. In this NHK report they cite that after 6 years of non occupancy a house will be considered a total loss. “The utility is to offer compensation based on how long the affected areas were designated as no-go zones. It will also assume that the value of the real estate will fall to zero 6 years after the accident.” NHK has since pulled the story off the website, a cached copy still exists online. If this is correct it puts some context on efforts to reopen the evacuation zone. Parts of Tomioka were reopened last week for brief visits to do repair work but not residency. Parts of Namie were reopened this week … Read entire article »

TEPCO’s Image Rehab Game

[Translate] The media jumped all over TEPCO’s latest excuse without a moment of investigation. TEPCO announced that the disaster happened because they were bad. The only media account that got it right was one by Mari Yamaguchi for AP. “Our safety culture, skills and ability were all insufficient,” TEPCO President Naomi Hirose told a news conference. “We must humbly accept our failure to prevent the accident, which we should have avoided by using our wisdom and human resources to be better prepared.” The report and staged for the media admissions were not prompted by any outside force, this was pure TEPCO. The stunt smacks of a disgraced televangelist or a politician caught with their pants down. Make a tearful admission about how awful you are and how you will be better in the … Read entire article »

Mainichi Exposes Widespread Nuclear Dark Money In Japan

[Translate] In a trio of articles Mainichi has exposed even more widespread dark money influence into groups assumed by the public to be altruistic or benign issue groups. In one they explain how a non profit “forum” group with hints of consumer advocacy actually received significant funding and contracts from the nuclear power industry and industry cooperative groups aimed at convincing the public to accept nuclear power. Yet another pair of supposed “volunteer” groups were PR front groups staffed by the nuclear power industry. These groups had deep ties into the government and academia. The two groups were behind the staged viewer questions sent to a TV show discussing nuclear power on behalf of Kyushu Electric. They also sent celebrities to stump for nuclear power and influence though chamber of commerce groups. Another supposed “housewives group” … Read entire article »

TEPCO Requiring Evacuees To Pay Back Temporary Compensation

[Translate] TEPCO is now requiring evacuees to pay back any temporary compensation payments given to them. If TEPCO makes a final settlement the initial money given to evacuees so they could survive, many with nothing but the clothes on their backs will have to be paid back. Most evacuees lost everything and many still sit nearly 2 years later with no compensation payment or settlement from TEPCO. While most of the world has assumed everything in Fukushima has been resolved, those impacted still fight to get even the basic compensation needed to replace their lost households.
