Miyagi Residents File Claim Radiation Exposure, The Data Behind The Issue

[Translate] Radiation doesn’t respect borders. People living in parts of Miyagi along the plume path from Fukushima Daiichi experienced worse conditions than many in Fukushima did but have been denied any assistance. Marumori Town and the Hippo district were among the areas where contamination was high. A group of people from the area have now filed a claim against TEPCO for compensation. The area in Miyagi received a significant plume on March 20th as we previously reported. There are also some known discrepancies with the monitoring stations in the area where many were placed too high up to be accurate representations of living conditions. A multitude of food products and soil have been showing as considerably contaminated in the area. Rice in the area was found to be double the government radiation … Read entire article »

Miyagi Thyroid Testing Raises Doubts About Government Claims

[Translate] Marumori town in Miyagi prefecture, just north of Fukushima has conducted their own independent thyroid exam survey. The survey involved 1977 children under 18 who volunteered to have their thyroids ultrasound scanned by a specialist doctor. They classified any nodules or cysts found by the same size ranges as the Fukushima Health Survey did. The scans in Marumori town found 13.1% had nodules or cysts that did not require follow up testing. Five children had nodules or cysts large enough to require follow up testing. The Fukushima Health Survey found around 44% of children had abnormal nodules or cysts. They tried to claim this was “normal” by first making a press release of an unpublished “study” of children in Tokyo that showed a high percentage of nodules and cysts. What was not … Read entire article »

More Thyroid Cancers Found In Fukushima Children

[Translate] 3 cancers have now been found in Fukushima children via the health survey. 7 are now suspected to have thyroid cancer. The 3 mentioned had surgery to deal with the cancer. Details were not given on the extent of the surgery or severity of the cancers found. The health survey continues to proclaim these cancers in children are pre-existing issues from before the nuclear disaster. This relies on a flawed concept from Chernobyl. There was about a 4 year gap between exposure and when formal screening of children began after Chernobyl. Some were found at that point to have cancers. The lack of testing for 4 years does not establish a latency period. While there are assumed latency periods with cancer development and long term studies of a bomb victims showed … Read entire article »

Inaccurate Study Used To Explain High Thyroid Damage Rate In Fukushima

[Translate] Asahi Shimbun reported on a study used by the Japan Thyroid Association to try to explain the unusually high thyroid nodule rates found in Fukushima children. What was missed by the media report is a very critical factor of this “study”. “They compiled records of 2,753 children, age 15 and under, who underwent ultrasound thyroid gland tests at the hospital between 2003 and August this year.” Before the Fukushima disaster a child would only be sent for an ultrasound scan of their thyroid if thyroid abnormalities or disease were already diagnosed or suspected. This study did not look at a random cohort (group) across the population of children to obtain a true random sampling of children. This study data was a collection of tests done on sick or suspected sick children. This can … Read entire article »

German Media Shows Backlash At Fukushima Health Survey

[Translate] German media ZDF ran a short piece on the Fukushima Health Survey Sunday. They interviewed parents in Minamisoma after a meeting with members of the Health Survey including Dr. Suzuki who has been acting as a stand in for Dr. Yamashita. There were demands for Dr. Yamashita to be fired from the survey, he has since had his title changed but is still very involved in running the survey. We have seen this frustration from parents at other public meetings with the Health Survey. Parents do not believe the excuses they are being told and most of the excuses are easily disproved. English transcript of the news piece: “After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima people feared the worst, but a UN study in May gave an all-clear. A new study now proves that … Read entire article »

Yamashita Declared Nobody Should Get Iodine After Fukushima Disaster

[Translate] The well known doctor behind the Fukushima Health Survey already has a long list of admissions and statements that have offended people worldwide. He told people to “smile” to prevent radiation damage and has admitted himself in numerous ways that the entire survey is a sham. This old article from March 22nd 2011 quotes Dr. Yamashita telling the public that the levels leaking out of Fukushima Daiichi were so low that nobody should have needed protective iodine tablets. Today we all know how absolutely untrue this is. He said this: “Information about radiation risks has not been correctly communicated. Under the current levels, administering iodine pills is unnecessary.” The Yomiuri newspaper included this in an article declaring the same view that exposure levels were low and iodine unnecessary. Both Asahi Shimbun and the Wall Street … Read entire article »

White Paper: Fukushima Health Survey Occupies Medical & Legal Conundrum

[Translate] The Fukushima Health Survey recently held a public meeting to address parent concerns about the survey. One of the concerns brought up by the parents was how difficult the survey has made it for parents to obtain the thyroid ultrasound photos of their children. Dr. Suzuki who has been running the Health Survey along with Dr. Yamashita said they would consider releasing the ultrasound photos without requiring a formal request from the parents first. There was no guarantee this would be implemented. Dr Suzuki also claimed it is unlikely thyroid cancer rates would rise and that the results found so far where over 43% of children had abnormalities were “ordinary”. Sukuki also claimed epidemiological studies on children in Japan had not been performed before. This is known to not be true. … Read entire article »

Faking Fukushima

[Translate] Greenpeace released their findings today from their ongoing investigation of the contamination in Fukushima. Greenpeace confirmed with solid confidence that most of the government radiation stations have been systematically faked downward. Most showed signs of decontamination around the station and had up to six times higher radiation when the researchers stepped away from the radiation station area. In mid October Greenpeace checked 40 radiation stations around Fukushima, 75% of them showed artificially low readings. The government claims this isn’t dishonest as they published somewhere the fact that the area near some stations was decontaminated. No explanation is given for online readings that clearly allows people to understand this or how they could then calculate the true level of radiation. We mentioned previously where MEXT had done something similar by citing the … Read entire article »

Yamashita Admits Exaggerating Safety Of Being In Fukushima

[Translate] Dr. Yamashita became world famous after the Fukushima nuclear disaster when he proclaimed 100 mSv to be a safe level of radiation exposure. His even stranger statement that “Radiation doesn’t affect people who are smiling” sparked outrage. This is the man in charge of the Fukushima radiation exposure survey, currently almost the only way residents can obtain data about their exposure or thyroid damage. Now Dr. Yamashita has admitted he exaggerated the safety of the situation in Fukushima. He admitted that ICRP radiation standards were valid, they show a much lower exposure to risk level than Yamashita has been promoting. He admits his statements added to the anxiety and distrust among the public and contributed to the discrimination towards those trying to take proper safety measures for their families. Japan Government Covers Up Children’s Radiation Doses, Again

[Translate] In a long list of bad actions by the Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters, that has been in charge of radiation dose information, yet another cover up has come out. The government announced the levels to be “zero” but the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) says that is not the case. “The government measured the hourly thyroid doses of 1,080 children under 16 years old in Fukushima Prefecture from March 24 to 30 last year, shortly after a disaster began to unfold at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on March 11. Five months later, the government’s Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters told the parents of 55 percent of the children that they had zero internal thyroid doses, which included doses below the detection limit of the testing equipment. A team of researchers led by Toshikazu … Read entire article »

High Exposures Found In Some Evacuees

[Translate] A group of 65 people were tested for radiation exposure by Hirosaki University soon after the disaster. 80% showed some level of thyroid exposure. Of those exposed 5 people were over 50 millisieverts of equivalent dose.  One person showed with 89 millisieverts and another with 77 millisieverts. Exposures seem to be somewhat tied to where they were during the critical early days of the accident. While the government has been proclaiming everyone safe and no potential bad health outcomes based on their questionnaire test, actual radiation tests like these are ignored and shuffled off to no mans land. Slow Health Screening, Anxiety And Moving On

[Translate] A year into the disaster in Japan, people in the Tohoku region struggle to gain access to diagnostic scans that can tell them their exposure level. Very few of the over 2 million people in Fukushima prefecture have received any sort of scan or estimation of their exposure. This has created the considerable anxiety of not knowing. Children largely did not receive thyroid scans in time to determine if they were exposed to high levels of iodine 131. So now instead of knowing if they were exposed annual thyroid exams will be done to try to catch developing tumors or other thyroid damage. Whole body scans have only been done on a few people with facilities like Minamisoma Hospital giving priority to scan children first. With limited machines in the region … Read entire article »

Children Are The Future, The Government of Japan Missed The Memo

[Translate] A relay marathon was planned to take place in Fukushima prefecture yesterday. The area where the race was to take place has radiation levels equal to the mandatory evacuation zone in Chernobyl. Someone went to Fukushima with a radiation detector and camera and took readings. One point of reading is in front of a horse race track. The horse race track is closed down, they didn’t want the horses to be irradiated. But it is ok for teenage girls to run a marathon in the same area. The readings on the race path are higher than they are at J Village. Workers outside at J Village are still required to wear a protective suit and face mask. Young girls running the race wore no protection. Just imaging how much contaminated air … Read entire article »

Children Become Pawns In Fukushima Disaster

[Translate] Officials in Tochigi Prefecture used school children in a PR stunt to promote local beef. Beef in the region had tested over the limit for cesium and shipments were banned for 3 weeks in August. Local beef was served to school children, the media and local farmers were invited to the event. At the same time beef in the area is being labeled as “below government limit”, this designation does not say if the beef had no cesium detected or if it was just below the 500 bq/kg. In a house budget meeting a representative relayed a story about a mother in Fukushima whose children, and others who refuse to drink milk in school lunches were called to the front of the classroom by their teacher and told they were not … Read entire article »
