TEPCO has taken down the large cranes and secured machinery in preparation of Typhoon Wipha. The size of this category 1 typhoon is huge. High winds from the large outer bands are being felt as far west at Hiroshima.
TEPCO canceled all offshore work and was considering canceling land based work. The storm may provide a challenge for all the gear TEPCO has placed outside to deal with the plant. Power panels are on small trucks and portable trailers. Cooling systems have been set up using portable equipment placed outside. All of this could be potentially damaged by a strong storm. One twitter account in Japan thought that high tide at the plant would coincide with the arrival of the storm. We have not been able to confirm this but if this is the case it could increase flooding at the plant.
Wipha has been called a “once in a decade” strong storm. Authorities were cautioning people to plan ahead and for schools to consider canceling Wednesday classes.
