More problems from the recent earthquake in Fukushima Prefecture are being found. Water leaks were discovered at units 1 and 3 on the 19th. Today TEPCO announced a pressure drop at unit 1. They currently assume the pressure drop is due to the reduced water level in the containment drywell. TEPCO does mention that they saw a similar behavior during a cooling water test and that they assume the lowered water level is exposing a pathway out of containment.
Previous pressure levels at unit 1 were around 1.21 kilopascals (as of 5:28 pm on February 21) then dropped to 0.90 kilopascals at 5:58pm the same day. TEPCO gave no explanation why the drop in pressure had been so abrupt. On site radiation sensors so far have not detected a notable change in environmental radiation levels.
We hope to have more information in this problem as the work week begins in Japan.
