  • @Dean But couldn't the earlymeasure of 10mil. have been caused by them using the boom detectore? They're much more sensitive, and usually a radtech checks with a hand-held.

  • are you saying that 100000 higher than the normal radiation level is good? well kudos to TEPCO because they found a way to tell you that 100.000 radiation level higher than normal level is good!

  • This report says cesium 137 binds to concrete and there is so much concrete at fukushima that surely radiation levels ever falling to allow workers in for any length of time is doubtful? www.businessweek.com

  • marie.. you bring up a good point.. we use boom meters all the time to approach cautiously high rad areas.. but before hand it is all mapped out with a pre survey by rad tech personnel and put on an map..

  • Hopefully some good news, my friend's brother is an electrical engineer based in the UAE - his company specialises in undersea cabling. He's being sent to Sakhalin next week - perhaps the Russians can get a cable across to Hokkaido and start supplying Japan's eastern grid. Hopefully can post some concrete evidence about it soon

  • the boom detectors we use are adjustable with a switch that turns to different decade readings.. so you have to know what your looking for

  • @dean: so they might be right: they annouced more than 1000 mSv/h, which is 100000 x 10 uSv/h. The odd fact are this level is still increadibly high... May we conclude they panic to the point of not being able to compute a single division ? (cynical joke...)

  • About that businessweek article, why are they calling it the second worst nuclear accident in history already? en.wikipedia.org this one looked pretty bad as well.. not a very populated area, but the amount of radioactive material released is pretty staggering.

I made a comment some days ago.. these accidents are unprecedented in the nuclear industry and we are operating outside the normal set of emergency procedures for accidents at facilities. .so, each day different crises and they have to make up a reaction plan or recovery plan and to be honest.. it's difficult at besst

  • yes optim... I hear on the news CNN a man who i would say is a dooms day type.. he says.. all hell will break loose.. but I don't think that .. it's not like chernobyl.. where a huge explosion ocurred as you alll know and spewed fuel all over... it's more like a huge radiation challenge

  • @Dean: I'd like to have an opinion about #3 reactor. Comparing to #4 and documents we have seen about Mark I desing, it seems to me that the building has collapsed lower than the top of the spent fuel pool. If so, its integrity could not have been preserved. Anyone knowing this plant design saying that I'm wrong would be great....

  • @VeenOui : acid rain has nothing to do with radiation. acud rains comes from pollution ( S ) in the air. radiation will not change the weather. rain will just washout the radiation from the air.

  • I feel that currently situation is just about in control. The first thing that we will notice is color of trees thru' webcam. Currently they are all lush green pointing that radiation is not even threatening for trees. Not sure how that relation works wrt to humans/infants/toddlers/kids

  • @dean, When the quake hit and some workers got locked inside one of the containment buildings, they reported steam coming from somewhere. Isnt it correct there is a specific valve that releases some steam into the containment in the event of a reactor scram ?
