  • @dean the news article about it said it smacked of trying to pull a legal maneuver, especially since no entity asked for the report.

  • Fukushima reactors now "stable", IAEA says . Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the expectation was that a "cold shutdown" of all reactors would be achieved as planned.
"The plant operator and the Japanese authorities have been working hard to regain full control of the situation and have made steady progress in the past six months," he told the 35-nation governing board of the Vienna-based U.N. agency.
"The situation at the site remained very serious for many months. The agency's assessment now is that the reactors are essentially stable," he added. af.reuters.com

  • TEPCO refused to give the JP house of reps and NISA their emergency manual. The first submission was the whole thing with most of the manual blacked out claiming corporate proprietary knowledge (like someone is going to steal TEPCO's fails emergency model). When a resubmission was demanded they sent back 3 pages, the cover page and table of contents with all but 2 lines blacked out. ex-skf.blogspot.com

  • So they refuse to give out the emergency manual and put out this big document nobody asked for but only in JP.

  • here we go @lilly I think it is the gov report and not a tepco one
An approximately 500-page report, to be submitted to the IAEA's board of governors and the IAEA general conference in Vienna from mid- to late September, will try to address that distrust.

The current draft says: "We recognize that it is our responsibility to provide accurate information about the accident, including lessons from the accident, to the international community."

It continues: "We paid attention to recording facts accurately and evaluating the response to the accident as objectively as possible."

The Noda administration is expected to approve the report at a meeting of the headquarters for nuclear disaster measures on Sept. 11, exactly six months after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

  • Edano:Create society not reliant on nuclear power

Economy and industry minister Yukio Edano says Japan should become a society that can live without nuclear power before it can have a national debate on the need for such energy.

Edano was giving his first news conference since taking office on Monday.

He said the swift development of alternative power sources and the promotion of energy saving measures could lead to a society that does not rely on nuclear power.

He said a public debate on the necessity of nuclear plants should be initiated at that time.

Edano also called on Japan to keep reducing gas emissions, but said there should be a fresh discussion of its stated target of a 25 percent cut from the 1990 level by 2020.

He said the emissions target should be reconsidered as Japan reviews its energy policy following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Referring to possible power shortages this winter, Edano said the government hopes to allow some of the country's idled nuclear plants to be restarted.

  • New Komeito criticizes new economy minister

The Secretary General of the opposition New Komeito party says he can't understand why Yukio Edano was appointed as the minister in charge of nuclear policy.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Yoshihisa Inoue said Edano was the chief cabinet secretary in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Naoto Kan. But he says while in that position, Edano failed to respond appropriately to the nuclear disaster which has caused hardships for many people.

Inoue said his party will ask Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to explain why he picked Edano for the position.

He also said the party will ask Edano whether he regrets his response to the nuclear disaster during the past 6 months.

  • @Edano are they just words or do they mean any of it? as for restarting nukes ! well that is what we call a recipe for disaster
    by elainekirk 9/12/2011 9:52:04 PM

  • @elainekirk these are cleverly chosen words for an economy and industry minister. in fact he says that japan will overcome nukes by supporting renewables and power saving. but he does not want keidaran immediately against him.
    by Edano 9/12/2011 9:54:59 PM

  • i could imagine that japan will shut down about half of its nukes forever and the rest in steps like in germany.
    by Edano 9/12/2011 9:57:44 PM

  • @Edano JP politicians sound like American politicians. Is there a form of democratic govt. that doesn't devolve into school yard behavior?
    by lillymunster 9/12/2011 9:58:07 PM

  • @lillymunster i think a nuclear accident of this size can change opinions.
    by Edano 9/12/2011 10:04:57 PM

  • @Edano @lillymunster If I may answer - NO - but then again is there a democratic government that is democratic?
    by elainekirk 9/12/2011 10:05:28 PM

  • (in germany, it has already changed the opinion of the former nuke head Merkel)
    by Edano 9/12/2011 10:05:52 PM

  • @elainekirk you are proposing a revolution ?
    by Edano 9/12/2011 10:09:30 PM

  • i fear the industry even survives revolutions, wars and defeats. they just change their names.
    by Edano 9/12/2011 10:11:04 PM

  • @Edano revolutions are an impotent tool I don't know the answer I wish I did
    by elainekirk 9/12/2011 10:23:30 PM

  • I would be happy if politicians started acting like responsible adults. The silly faux pas are one thing, going after the opposition just because makes it hard to get anything done.

If you want to find information about old "incidents" in Marcoule (and in others in France) you can look on the GSIEN website (Groupement des Scientifiques pour l'Information sur l'Energie Nucleaire = Group of Scientists for Information on Nuclear Energy) All their publications (the first one is in 1976!) are on line resosol.org

    by Edano 9/12/2011 11:43:29 PM

  • @lillymunster I saw the Energy news but I don't think they are right. The explosion did not affect parts of Marcoule were there are a lot of very very bad stuff: Mox, a lot of plutonium, weapons, research labs...
    by Olivier 9/12/2011 11:44:37 PM

  • @Olivier right. The explosion was in a metal melting furnace. Maybe the expert in the original article wasn't aware? Or does he really mean that there could have been enough radioactive particles to cause a criticality? Earlier guesses were a pocket of moisture causing a steam explosion.
    by lillymunster 9/12/2011 11:49:00 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I don't know what was more odd. The patriotic angle or the gross generalization that anyone over 65 is a Tea Partier.
