  • @Dean, Thought you meant plant #2 daini, not reactor #2 lol
    by WolfDK 3/26/2011 11:25:16 PM

  • @Dean what is "chugging"?
by marie rich 3/26/2011 11:25:34 PM

  • ha ha Wolf.. it gets hard to keep them all straight.. daini.. are ok.. RIGHT
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:26:15 PM

  • daichi are not
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:26:21 PM

  • didn't you get the link on chugging marie
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:26:45 PM

  • I'm feeling embarassed for some reason.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:27:26 PM

  • No why don't you give it tome again? Better yet, just explain it real quick...
by marie rich 3/26/2011 11:27:30 PM

  • Poor guy.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:28:08 PM

  • @Jim Carver He did that on FB page, to.
by marie rich 3/26/2011 11:28:44 PM

  • There is a practical limitation on the length of upper compartment 14. If this compartment becomes too long, it may become the site of unstable flow or "chugging." In this case upward flowing steam at the tube exit will be too great to permit water flow down into the tube. As the completely voided condition is approached, the steam flow will decrease and liquid flow will begin again. This cycle of volume and refilling will continue endlessly. This flouroscillation would not be desired and would defeat the nuclear characteristics of the water rod W. Therefore, we preferred to limit the length of upper compartment 14 to about 1/4 to 1/3 the total length of the fuel bundle depending on the counter current flow characteristics of the particular water rod design.
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:29:02 PM

  • *too*
by marie rich 3/26/2011 11:29:07 PM

  • Really. That's sad.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:29:12 PM

  • Daini was nearly toast, too. they had no cooling and high pressure in the vessel. they prepared to release steam on #1,2,4 but they didn't do it. maybe because they saw what happened to Daiichi. Reactor #2 was worst.
    by Matsuoko 3/26/2011 11:29:27 PM

  • Don't know if this was posted prior..Fukushima emissions getting closer to Chernobyl Levels.
    www.newscientist.com
    by VeenOui 3/26/2011 11:29:32 PM

  • marie, when that unstable flow turns to steam the fuel element cladding can have an zironium-water ignition .. due to over heating the cladding
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:30:45 PM

  • @VeenOui : this will definitely exceed chernobyl. they have much much more fuel in fukushima.
    by Matsuoko 3/26/2011 11:31:05 PM

  • Someone over on the fb page brought up a good point that I think needs to be stressed on this blog, too. "After watching the spinoffs of the blog and seeing what people are saying it's quickly turned into a platform to turn this entire situation into a conspiracy. Reuters was able to block comments that said "I think that we're being lied to....etc" and now they're all over. It's really sad to see people fear mongering and being sensational when there is no information to indicate that we should be as such. We call all infer what is happening but no one that isn't involved directly does know. If there is enough radiation to wipe out half the population of Japan I GUARANTEE you that someone will say something! Please, people, be educated on the issue instead of inferring on the issue. "
    by Andy 3/26/2011 11:31:31 PM

  • @Matsuoko -- almost 10 X more and most of the release will be close to the plant.
    by Alaskan 3/26/2011 11:31:57 PM

  • @Matsuoko You are correct. Fukushima Daiichi has about 1760 tons of active and spent fuel rods in 6 reactors, while Chernobyl had about 170 tons in one reactor, maybe less.
by James Ward 3/26/2011 11:32:56 PM

  • does that make sense marie
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:32:57 PM

  • @andy CI-38 look it up and tell me how the reactor is not critical if this was found in water under the plant? www.nisa.meti.go.jp
by Patrick Kelley 3/26/2011 11:33:06 PM

  • @Matsuoko I tried to post that on reuters 3 times, no luck.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:33:29 PM

  • @Dean: But in reactor no 2 was also an explosion... just not from hydrogyn
    by me 3/26/2011 11:33:58 PM

  • @Andy I could not agree more with what you said.
    by M 3/26/2011 11:35:06 PM

  • @ALL Bye 'til later. Be happy! At least we're not poisened by rads yet. @Jim Carver I'm outta here. Dinner time and 'this' is spoiling my appetite.
by marie rich 3/26/2011 11:36:08 PM

  • @Andy : i hate this word "fear mongering". this is not the type of speech that you yourself would accept. i can see no fear mongering here and no conspiracy theories. sorry, not at all.
    by Matsuoko 3/26/2011 11:36:25 PM

  • see ya marie
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:36:25 PM

  • Has anyone heard anything about this report on No. 3? "A senior nuclear executive who insisted on anonymity but has broad contacts in Japan said that there was a long vertical crack running down the side of the reactor vessel itself" -http://www.ndtv.com/article/world/japan-encourages-a-wider-evacuation-from-reactor-area-94229
    by Miles 3/26/2011 11:36:42 PM

  • @Andy I'm just saying what I see.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:36:53 PM

  • me.. was the explosion in the upper building above the concrete container?
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:37:00 PM

  • @Andy Do you really believe TEPCO has been telling us the truth, especially since most of us know their past history on being less than truthful on maintenance issues? Just because someone's lying to you doesn't mean anyone's generating a conspiracy...it just means they're lying. Even the Japanese PM got really angry at one point and asked TEPCO "what the hell is going on?".
by James Ward 3/26/2011 11:37:01 PM

  • @Matsuoko Saying something like "this will be worse than Chernobyl" with no evidence to back it up or prove it is fear mongering.
    by Andy 3/26/2011 11:37:05 PM

  • I didn't think so
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:37:06 PM

  • @Alaskan: Chernobyl also had multiple reactors with quite a lot of fuel on site.. just none of the others actually blew up (although one was burning for quite a while and had to be saved at the cost of many lives).
    by sims 3/26/2011 11:37:07 PM

  • Been looking around the web, I see that the media is being even more close-mouthed than ever. What are your guys findings of the current situation?
by Sinthia Domina 3/26/2011 11:38:10 PM

  • sims.. I think the last reactor in that whole facility stopped operating recently.
    by Dean 3/26/2011 11:38:10 PM

  • @James Ward Even if they aren't, do you think that mass amounts of people are teetering on the edge of death because they haven't told people what's going on or do you think that it may be worse than what they're saying but the proper precautions are being taken given the situation.
    by Andy 3/26/2011 11:38:11 PM

  • @Matsuoko Saying "We assume Media Blackout !" is fear mongering
    by M 3/26/2011 11:38:48 PM

  • Zero numbers today, could mean anything.
    by Jeff 3/26/2011 11:38:57 PM

  • Interesting to hear on NHK how this situation is starting to affect reactor managrment and fuel handling elsewhere in Japan. One plant was supposed to take delivery of some French MOX but there is not way to ensure security in transporting it -- everyone is at Fukushima.
    by Alaskan 3/26/2011 11:40:17 PM

  • @Andy I really can't answer your question because I might be speculating if I do. Until TEPCO starts becoming more transparent, people will continue to speculate whether you like it or not.
by James Ward 3/26/2011 11:40:24 PM

  • @Sinthia Domina Everybody tight-lipped except a "crazy physicist". Journalist looking scared.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 11:40:29 PM

  • @dean: i dont know, there is no footage about this, becourse it take place at 5am japan time on the 15.03 ...
