@Mona Hi Mona! We think it is ionizing radiation or a Cherenkov glow. The two we see off and on seem to come from the top of #3 or #4. Some nights it is there, some not.

It seems Japan has no law on the disposal of radioactive matter outside the legal no go zone which means the schoolyards cannot be cleared , I am not absolutely sure if this means the children will have to attend school but not disturb the playground surface, it appears to be so but using translate so will have to keep watching translate.google.com

No Japan in the headlines today whatsoever. (Mission accomplished?) Front page of ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, NPR -- no sign that Japan even exists... On ABC, they have headlines about JCrew and the Jackson doctor, but no Japan. CBS follows OBL with ex-Mis USA molested by TSA.

one comment on the radiation leaks from fuel rods... in my nuclear world we call that a leaker... ie: a cladding defect that develops and can be minuscule, but, non the less leaks some of the isotopes of fission into the coolant system

@Scilla That made me chuckle (re: 'They' have landed), and also made me realize just how cynical I have become. Ten or fifteen years ago, that probably would have been the first thing on my mind when the Pres. makes a sudden 11pm Live Conference, but what I wrote down last night in my notes was "War, Economy, Science, Nature" in that order, and little green men never even crossed my mind.

@dean for us sludge is the "crap" in the bottom of the "sludge tank" removed by verious systems.... if it was not "hot" material (non-nuke) it would be recycled into lots of things... in Japan I think they have already made some into concrete...

@dean while reading the info you sent on the chenical cleaning and do more goggle's it apperas that the cooling system (may have to recheck) collect a wax film on the inside of the pipe... this is common on a lot of systems... the removal and particals filltered out become "sludge" that why i suspect some of the weird "hot spots" may be parts to the cleaning systems and or sludge tanks stc

@dean that would be my assumption... this arlticle sounded like it was the sludge form the water processing plants that they did not know was "hot".. untill it had already been processed... but the sludge from the containment building equipment they would know is "hot"..... just wondering what they do with it????

we need to segregate the waste sludge and then pinpoint which is contaminated..... if it's in the water treatment.. I mean where they handle and process rad waste .. it needs to be disposed of in a burial site..

Think of it this way. The Cherenkov effect goes on inside the water, not in the air above the SFP. In order for things to be emitting enough radiation that it would be visible above the buildings, rather than just if you look into the pool straight-on, you would have to have a really, really, high energy condition going on. That I don't buy -- big time megawatts. Everyone would be keeling over.

Similar for theorizing that it is ionizing the air. Truly massive power would have to be getting emitted for that to occur -- I don't buy it for an instant.

@mark given that the top is open bar some girders on #4 and the sfp is near the top then add in the camera angle it is possible that the pool surface is giving the glow is it not? as there were broken fuel rods in that pool it doesnt sound to be immune to shaking

When you push at the noise floor, then crank brightness/contrast, no, there isn't always much, if any, actual external source -- you have CCD artifacts, electronic, pop up.
