  • the penetrations are of various sizes elaine,, and there are seals to prevent reactor water from leaking out...one type of seal is the graphatar seal which is made of graphite... there are several seal types... when they say there is a hole or holes in the bottom head from the corium they typically are refering to those different sizes of penetration

    by UKVal 5/28/2011 9:58:56 PM

  • Ralph.. I would think the largest drives would be the safety rods.. o r blades as they call them..then control rods, then the smaller penetration drives for the nuclear instrumentation drive which positions an ionization chamber in the core

  • @UKVal It has looked like mostly really low clouds over the site...rain-spattered lens so it blows, but the clouds are so low the movement is probably more surface. I doubt its blowing much yet on the mountain.

  • BACK TO WATER LEVELS

Fukushima I Nuke Plant: Water Levels Rising in Trenches from Reactors 2, 3

If the typhoon No.2 dumps a whole lot of rain, they will overflow. Even if it doesn't, it looks just the matter of time.

From the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industries (METI)'s press release (in Japanese) on May 28 on the Fukushima I plant conditions, "Water levels at trenches":

    Reactor 2 trench water level:

5/7: 880 millimeters (34.65 inches) from the top of grating of the trench
    5/14: 760 millimeters (29.92 inches)
    5/21: 760 millimeters (29.92 inches)
    5/28: 576 millimeters (22.68 inches)

    Reactor 3 trench water level:

5/7: 820 millimeters (32.28 inches) from the top of grating of the trench
    5/14: 720 millimeters (28.35 inches)
    5/21: 640 millimeters (25.20 inches)
    5/28: 431 millimeters (16.97 inches)

The top edge of the trenches is at the Onahama Peil (O.P., average sea level used for the plant) plus 4,000 millimeters. In other words, 4 meters (13.12 feet) above sea level.

Yeah you have to watch for the z's replacing s's lol but you can just ignore without doing anything it is passive so just acts as a prompt
If you click the spanner top right it has a nifty zoom function in it:)

  • They have NO DOUBT halted Water Cyphening since i posted the original due to some electric work...they never resumed
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 10:32:04 PM

  • @Veenie It seems to me that more of the water will spread around anyway. whether by overflowing. leaks, spills or 'accidental 'spills
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 10:38:51 PM

  • @veenie you sais saturday/sunday and here we are- only problem for tepco is that they thought the typhoon was going to come along and they could lose it in the ocean but they may have to rethink -

  • ralph.. yes they are immediately on the bottom head.. there are other penetrations that are up the radius of the bottom head that would be candidates to either melt or... flow through
