  • one point @all... severe accidents are analyzed assuming the reactor is operating at the full nominal reactor power,, the results of the analyses typically show margins to failures for fuel. One way to bring the margins to fuel failure down to within design basis is to lower the full power of the reactor which in turn increases the margins to failure. Of course utilities hate to do that because it cuts into profits.. but.. even NRC has imposes reduced power restrictions and I belive the Japan reactors who dont meet margins should lower power until they do
    by dean 5/28/2011 10:51:56 PM

  • good point @dean
    by elainekirk 5/28/2011 10:58:46 PM

  • ty elaine.. if a letter was sent for other reasons to japan it could include suggestion to lower power for safety until analysis is done

  • @Elaine, just another excuse ......oh it was the Typhoon........they should have cyphened, they knew it was coming !!

  • by Edano via Polpix.sueddeutsche 5/28/2011 11:06:01 PM

  • @Veenie they had been scouting buildings for almost a month to store water in. They knew they were going to run out. Now that building is leaking. I think they are completely out of ideas. Being able to blame a large release on a typhoon would be convenient.
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:06:25 PM

  • that's the one I just looked up Edano.. nice read
    by dean 5/28/2011 11:06:32 PM

  • @Nancy Well, once more i have to call B$ !.they had the SUPER large Water Storage Bin coming..no wrod on that being filled either ?
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:08:12 PM

  • @Veenie are you talking about the megafloat? If they have that ready to go why are they not moving trench water into it now?
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:10:29 PM

  • @Nancy My point exactly...what is keeping them from preventing overflow unless they use the Typhoon as a coverup for already spilled ?!
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:13:32 PM

  • @Veenie the megafloat went over about a week ago.
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:17:41 PM

  • have we seen this video ?

    by Edano 5/28/2011 11:18:02 PM

  • @Nancy I remember cause TBS Feed had it live coming in but that was the last we heard of, TEPCO didn't release ANY info on it to my knowledge
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:19:58 PM

  • @Edano they sure made that one look all nice, and clean, and undestroyed, and just a little water to slosh through, eh?
    by deb 5/28/2011 11:21:24 PM

  • I have immense sympathy for the TEPCO operatives who are trying to deal with this -if not for the bosses. It seems like everything is against them. No matter what they try to do something makes it impossible. they have to keep the reactors& SFP's cool - but this results in immense quantities of radioactive water which they can't prevent from leaking. They try to shore up the buildings, but are hampered by radioactivity levels & further quakes & now possibly storms....
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 11:21:30 PM

  • @Edano You have no idea, how much it bothers me, that no one in the US is reporting like this !!!
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:22:13 PM

  • @Veenie ditto for UK -zilch reporting
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 11:23:43 PM

  • @UKVal I have ZERO nada ZILCH sympathy for TEPCO .PERIOD.......they siffer from BAD KARMA because of their LIES and deceipt......... they meed to change any and all negative behavior to get ahead !!
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:23:46 PM

  • @Veenie I'm talking about the minions who are trying to deal with this not those who ignored the warnings & put profits before people
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 11:24:41 PM

  • @UKVal there has been a pattern where the people at the plant and the people in the corporate office butt heads or the corporate office wants final say. The seawater injection that was supposedly stopped briefly didn't. One of the operators or engineers at the plant ignored corporate and kept pumping in water. TEPCO corporate was going to fire him but realized they needed him to handle the disaster. Then there was the BS with the temporary tsunami wall they wanted. They had to convince the corporate office in order to do it. The Govt. needs to yank control away from TEPCO and put some of their skilled people in the country on the issue.
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:25:35 PM

  • @Nancy Well, that's the problem, they Goverment is currently run by poccketliners !!
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:26:43 PM

  • @Veenie I have seen this situation time after time across many industries. The technical people will try to tell the non technical people something and it gets ignored because either they are stupid and don't understand what they are being told or they have other goals (like profits or PR) and find it convenient to ignore a technical issue.
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:27:05 PM

  • @Veenie I was thinking more appointing some of their university profs and skilled engineers in the industry. But the entire system is so intertwined. It is like nobody ever thought this might be bad for oversight.

  • news about the german ethic commission, this is a congregation of scientists, industrials, philosophers, church people and others across the country, who discussed the best way out of nuke energy. chancellor merkel has promised to follow the conclusions of this "ethic commission". on monday they will recommend to shutdown all german reactors until 2021. the seven already halted shall not be reactivated. this is possible and preferable from all points of view - economically, sociologically and ecologically.
    by Edano 5/28/2011 11:28:57 PM

  • @Nancy If it was me, i would let the actual people at the Plant run the show......god know's, they do not want to get killed...i again as i have done many times before, .blame the GoJ just as much as TEPCO....the GoJ has failed to RULE in a humane interest fashion !
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 11:29:15 PM

  • @Veenie it is the pair of elephants in the room.
    by Nancy 5/28/2011 11:31:01 PM

  • @Edano German will led the way. Others will eventually follow. Has being all way like that. Thanks for the good news :-)))))
    by Majj 5/28/2011 11:31:03 PM

  • @Nancy agreed
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 11:32:29 PM

  • @Majj : even our nuke industry - RWE, Vattenfall, EON, Siemens ..... have already accepted the turn. not much resistance, at least as long as the news from fuku stay bad.
    by Edano 5/28/2011 11:34:04 PM

  • I think it possible that the mega float was vetoed by other nations as Japan is expecting further quakes/tsunami so it would be at risk and nobody else wants it
    by elainekirk 5/28/2011 11:34:08 PM

  • It get's me sooo mad.......why arent JPN citizen's on this Blog to get info out ?......if they are on Blogs, which one ?........here in the US, we WANT them to come forward to spread the word....where are they ??

  • about the "ethic commission" in english : www.cbs.dk
    by Edano 5/28/2011 11:38:50 PM

  • @Veenie There can be quite a divide, not everyone speaks or reads English. Many who are effected don't have net access. It seems like the highly connected to the outer world type people are following this, writing about this etc. If we want people to find us we need to get it in the Japanese media

i have to add, germany has already had the decision to end nuke energy until 2021 - the law was made by the former red-green government. it was angela merkel who cancelled this law in october 2010. now she tries to make a rollback which will cost her a lot of money and credibility.

  • Naaaaaaancyyyyyyyyyyyy, here we go already Water outside of Silk Fence higher than inside
Fukushima I Nuke Plant: Higher Radioactive Materials Outside the Silt Fence of Reactor 4 Than Inside?

Some funny numbers for the Reactor 4's nuclide analysis at the silt fence at the water intake.

TEPCO's press release on May 28 on the samples taken on May 27 shows the water OUTSIDE the silt fence for the Reactor 4 water intake had a much higher radioactive material concentration than the water inside the silt fence.

This wasn't the case at all on May 25 samples whose level of radioactive materials was higher INSIDE the silt fence, as you would expect. Hmmm. The silt fence for the Reactor 4 water intake is not working? But why would the outside be more radioactive than the inside?

Top, May 25 sample data; bottom, May 27 sample data, from TEPCO press releases; iodine-131, cesium 134, cesium-137:
