  • @all Morning! Noticed some comments On Gundersen...just my two cents...I've watched all the videos...if Gundersen were an anti-nuclear activist he wouldn't be lobbying for better safety measures and regs, he would be fighting to stop nuclear power.
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:03:43 PM

  • back... hi to all
    by dean 6/9/2011 2:04:55 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus What I meant was that the people of Japan will now, eventually, change their situation on the ground irrespective of what else is being played out in global media or politics.
    by jt 6/9/2011 2:07:29 PM

  • @dean hi there I have the wash day blues :)
    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 2:07:38 PM

  • lilly gm.. there are analyses and tests that have been conducted to measure those times for reactor vessels and concrete
    by dean 6/9/2011 2:09:04 PM

  • @jt Yes, and hopefully so will others. We should all take this as a wake up call.
by Pedro Jesus 6/9/2011 2:09:16 PM

  • @jt I can see them forming their own communities I hope they do and that government do nothing more than ensure they are funded with the money given by global communities that is now languishing in beurocratic red tape hell
    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 2:09:38 PM

  • @elainekirk Well said.
    by jt 6/9/2011 2:11:03 PM

  • @LM i think he is not so much for Npp, but stopping the ones that are not permited yet now, and getting the ones that are of older design shut down first,,, if you may have noticed there are some that are 30 years old and are being recertifided for 20 more years,,, then some of them are also being OK for a power increase which lowers the safety design paramiters.... they are not going to shut down tommarow, but if you start with the worst while working on the safety of ones that will be operating for 20 more years.... i think its about the best anyone can hope for....
    by fitter 6/9/2011 2:14:04 PM

  • @dean hello
    by fitter 6/9/2011 2:14:41 PM

  • @peter are you on still
    by fitter 6/9/2011 2:15:07 PM

  • @LM From what I understood, Gundersen's beliefs have changed considerably over time. His latest efforts focus on the need for a new energy paradigm, away from nuclear fission power and based on renewable energy sources. Maybe the word activist is a bit too much but he has been known to work closely with anti-nuclear groups. So he's currently lobbying for the progressive switch from nuclear to renewable energy, despite his lifetime career in the nuclear industry.
by Pedro Jesus 6/9/2011 2:16:54 PM

  • hi fitter.. good seeing you
    by dean 6/9/2011 2:17:14 PM

  • @elainekirk can you check the mod, i sent a post that was before my hellos that is not on the board
    by fitter 6/9/2011 2:17:34 PM

  • Will Canada take Fukushima's radioactive rods?
    www.vancouverobserver.com
    by trh 6/9/2011 2:17:48 PM

  • @fitter the board is clear the gremlin must have woken from his slumbers
    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 2:19:38 PM

  • I am opposed to have any outside country take the radioactive rods. The only reason that could potentially be beneficial is to study parts of the core for lessons learned, other than that it's a Japanese problem and responsibility to build storage capabilities.
    by dean 6/9/2011 2:22:55 PM

  • @dean i totally agree
    by trh 6/9/2011 2:24:43 PM

  • Three Mile Island partial core was sent to another state for detailed post accident examination from which came changes to the approach to analyses for reactor safety etc. performing this took months and was very expensive and the waste still resides in the "receiving" state.
    by dean 6/9/2011 2:26:43 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus That might be true, but his positions seem to be grounded in knowledge and reason. I personally wouldn't discount him because he has doubts about nuclear energy. Who should we look to for advice...Tepco? He has worked in the field his entire career and has been trying to change the safety culture. I applaud his efforts!
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:27:19 PM

  • @LM I think looking at any information and the source is a good way to deal with research. You can have a source that you feel or know has a known bias that can still provide useful information. It is still upon the reader to determine if the facts behind said statement is correct, skewed or outright fabricated. There is a wide variety of resources and sometimes it can be tough to determine if they are being truthful or using accurate facts to make their assumptions. Gundersen has a pretty good reputation for operating on facts and being honest. What I find amusing are some of the nuclear industry groups that outright fabricate PR statements that nuclear energy is totally safe and nobody ever gets hurt by it even in an accident. It is like dealing with politics. You will get all variety of groups making statements, some truthful, some very twisted and distorted.
    by lillymunster 6/9/2011 2:35:26 PM

  • @LM I never said otherwise. I only cautioned to not take his comments by the letter... I'm pretty sure when he says "it's time to leave Japan" he is NOT actually telling the Japanese government to immediately seek exile and evacuate 127 million people. I also noted his vast experience in the nuclear industry... he worked in 70 different nuclear facilities as a nuclear engineer and safety adviser. I'm pretty sure he absolutely knows what he's talking about and I was very clear about that on my previous comments. On the other hand, I also know that the complexity of this accident at Fukushima Daiichi NPP goes well beyound Gundersen's and anybody else's understanding and experience. That's what unprecedented means. He might know what he's saying but he's still guessing some. And being the honest and concerned person he is, he guesses upon
    the worst case scenario.
by Pedro Jesus 6/9/2011 2:37:31 PM

  • @Nancy I completely agree! @pedro I definitely take everything with a grain of salt and weigh everything carefully. Everyone is speculating to a large degree because as you correctly said this event is unprecedented. I try not to decide whether someone is credible based upon their like or dislike of nuclear power and read between the lines. Bias is coming from every direction here I'm just grateful to all of you for helping me sort through it all!
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:43:38 PM

  • Thank you!! All of you!
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:44:49 PM

  • It's a great team work we have here. =) I make mine LM's words.
by Pedro Jesus 6/9/2011 2:45:57 PM

  • Great team and great gremlin on this board!

    by alblee 6/9/2011 2:47:49 PM

  • @alford Yikes!!
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:48:57 PM

  • Alblee...I guess my iPad didn't like your name...sorry!
    by LM 6/9/2011 2:49:39 PM

  • Morning,
Is there anywhere an explanation why the other board is closed?...I went through the pages and not a reference at all ?????
    by Veenie 6/9/2011 2:53:48 PM

  • @LM, that Google search result update cycled itself just 18 minutes or so after you posted. Wow.
    by ALBLEE 6/9/2011 2:54:22 PM

  • @Alblee Big brother is watching!

  • Hellloooooooooooo
    by Veenie 6/9/2011 3:01:07 PM

  • Hi, @Veenie. I'm not sure what's up with the other board. I've been scarce lately due to work. Nice to see you at this time.
    by ALBLEE 6/9/2011 3:02:07 PM

  • @ALBLEE Hi, can yopu check to see if it's needing to be restarted like many times before ?
    by Veenie 6/9/2011 3:02:59 PM

  • @Veenie I don't know what's going on but I think it happened a few days ago for a 3 hr period. I think Angie took care of it.
    by LM 6/9/2011 3:03:19 PM

  • @fitter , I am back! Greetings, all. I agree with Dean. Globalization is such a trendy term these days. I already felt uneasy when the West Germans sold their trash to the East Germans whose regime eagerly took it because of the hard coin they so direly needed. End storage Mongolia sounds like one insane idea.
by Peter Melzer 6/9/2011 3:03:25 PM

  • Well, it shut down at 12AM from what it looks like.....but no notice....YOU have to put a notice up, this is causing questions and i am sure no one want's to answer them all day right ?
    by Veenie 6/9/2011 3:04:44 PM

  • @Veenie I didn't notice until you said something. Unfortunately, I can't be of any help...Someone will come to the rescue!
    by LM 6/9/2011 3:08:26 PM

  • As to the corium projections, I believe predicting how far the melt-through progressed will be complicated by the fact that the process may not have fully advanced. Some corium may still be in the RPV, some in the primary containment and some in the secondary containment. I recall the base mat to be seven meters thick. If some corium was burning into it, it would need to keep smoldering on it for some time.
by Peter Melzer 6/9/2011 3:08:59 PM

  • Ok, where is Nancy, Angie , Elaine...why is none of you answering ?
This makes it seem suspicious when a mod that is always here is not putting up a notice..the Board being down for over 7 hrs GUARANTEED is not unnoticed!
    by Veenie 6/9/2011 3:10:05 PM

  • I am also wondering how much of the water poured on top actually reaches the site of action.
by Peter Melzer 6/9/2011 3:10:47 PM

  • @Veenie It's not over 7 hours - go to bottom of 'newest'
    by FradyKat 6/9/2011 3:11:10 PM

  • @Veenie, my privilege level is not high enough and restart requires admin access, methinks.
by ALBLEE edited by alblee 6/9/2011 3:12:17 PM

  • @Veenie I just saw your post. It was working when I checked it this morning. No clue why it isn't working. I would need to check with the other mods to see if anyone knows anything. There was some funkiness going on with the tech board earlier this morning. So I don't know anymore than you do.
