  • @carabnr , I second @bo. In addition, for wide dissemination of your work it is important to find a venue for publication that provides access for free.
by Peter Melzer 6/8/2011 11:47:28 PM

  • TY Peter. I agree, it is especially important to get it to the people working at the plant. Do you think I should try to send the document there?
    by carabnr 6/8/2011 11:49:42 PM

  • @ Majj, I couldn't get to the link.

  • @carabnr , I'd wait for @bo's suggestions. If he finds a widely read outlet for this over there, they will get to read it.

  • @Peter Melzer ty. And @carabnr I think that the plant has no interest in advice. Better if we can find a place that will get the info out widely enough that it will penetrate into the plant. And @all, good night. Sorry to hit and run, but I blame the red wine. I'll check in tomorrow for a bit before I begin to travel back to Nihon.

    by Angie 6/8/2011 11:59:49 PM

  • @ Bo and Peter. I think if the workers know what i have to say it will help them even if TEPCO won't listen. And the researchers at UEOH (look it up) may try to get involved.

  • TEPCO plans to move an additional 2,700 tons of highly-contaminated water from the reactor buildings to an adjacent waste processing facility.
The move is an attempt to postpone by 5 days water overflowing from a tunnel outside Reactor 2. This could occur on June 20th if a new water-decontaminating system is not installed and in operation by next Wednesday. www3.nhk.or.jp

    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 12:31:39 AM

  • @radioguy flaming radioactive chainsaws. Of course with hello kitty and nice blue cloud patterns painted on for proper PR effect. :-)
    by lillymunster 6/9/2011 12:35:57 AM

  • @nancy that doc also says that before their lisence suspension re the whilstle blowing their permission to start mox had been wthdrawn because their mox was the same batch as the dud mox at the other plant so the delay was not to do with their falsification ban and leaves the question if they had been stopped from using it soon after its arrival in 99 then would per, ission havve been granted for the 99 fuel almost a decade later? I think not I think it is another sign that they had more mox

    by es 6/9/2011 12:39:33 AM

  • @lillymunster , MOX is only used because the fast breeders don't work and the operators need to dispose of the plutonium. It is a high-wire act dictated by shortcomings in the fuel cycle. Gives me the creeps.
by Peter Melzer 6/9/2011 12:45:56 AM

  • @elainekirk Dean didn't think it would horribly degrade to the point of being unusable. There is a scientist that worked for a UK antinuke group Oxford Research maybe? He claimed that the 1999 MOX at Fukushima was done under the same flawed design specs and processes as the British batch that was sent back. FUKU's was made by a different company but this guy states that the same flaws existed. The two TEPCO deliveries were similar in size. The Fuku was 225 kg and Kashiwazaki was 200kg.

  • People visible on TEPCO cam!
    by es 6/9/2011 12:47:40 AM

  • @Peter Melzer When I read the details that outlined how it only actually burns up more plutonium than exists or is created by burning if it is run in quantities and rates far outside the safety limits I just couldn't believe it. It is a dangerous technology with no real gain.
    by lillymunster 6/9/2011 12:47:42 AM

  • I sure hope that guy was spraying green resin or else he is glowing green!
    by lillymunster 6/9/2011 12:48:30 AM

  • @lillymunster , but we must burn the plutonium. That is what is driving this risk taking.
by Peter Melzer 6/9/2011 12:48:52 AM

  • @es there was a report earlier about how radioactive elements had become mixed in with recycled aluminium, and copper they did realise that drink cans had got traces that way and are taking measures (the drink companies it seems rather than the authoritiies) but of course it is costing them a great deal of money and it would be better if the problem were sortd earlier in the chain, yet again there doesnt seem to be much sign of the government being pro active in this disaster
    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 12:49:11 AM

  • @elainekirk Yeah, it's a real mess :(
    by es 6/9/2011 12:50:03 AM

  • @Peter Melzer but the safe limits of operation don't burn it up....
    by lillymunster 6/9/2011 12:50:19 AM

    by elainekirk 6/9/2011 12:50:46 AM

  • Nuclear age has led to millions of fewer baby girls being born.
    www.dailymail.co.uk
Nuclear radiation from power plant leaks and bomb tests resulted in millions fewer baby girls born worldwide, according to a new study by scientists at Helmholtz Zentrum München, Germany, who analysed population data for the U.S. and 39 European countries. There was an increase in the number of baby boys relative to girls in all of the countries from 1964 to 1975. This was also the case in many eastern European countries for several years after 1986. Scientists are putting the first spike down to the atomic bomb tests of the 1960s and 1970s.

They think the second spike is due to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in which the reactor exploded in the Ukraine. 'The closer the country was to Chernobyl, the stronger the effect,' said study co-author Hagen Scherb.
