  • US Ambassador Roos -ambassador to Japan-has just tweeted this for World Ocean Day
Snapshot: Saving Oceans — and the Planet
    iipdigital.usembassy.gov
Am I alone in finding the radioactive pollution of OUR oceans not getting so much as a mention deeply offensive ? he may as well say our priority is economic success, people are irrelevant?
    by elainekirk 6/8/2011 11:08:41 PM

  • @Veenie, well, the temptation to "bait" French waiters is pretty strong! @elainekirk, sad to say, but I'm sure if you were having cocktails with Ambassador Roos, he might just say that exact thing.
    by bo 6/8/2011 11:10:07 PM

  • @elainekirk About time he opned his mouth, cause he for sure has been uncomfortably silent.....

    by Veenie 6/8/2011 11:12:58 PM

  • @veenie @bo I wish he had kept it shut!!
ocean trash can seriously affect human health (sharp items can cut beachgoers; batteries, car parts and chemical drums can leak toxic compounds). Wildlife is also threatened:

  • @ bo I missed you. I have a question. I'm trying to get papers published. I wrote 2 one about 800 words and the other a research doc about 2600 words. I was hoping you could help me navigate the Japanosphere. I have submitted to the NYT, Reuters, Yomuri Times, Japan Times, and ASAHI. This is a copy of the letter I just sent to Reuters. Dear David,

Our group SimplyInfo has been following the events at Fukushima closely since we were on the Japan Earthquake live blog at Reuters. Our group  was an off cast from your live blog.  We decided to start our own and have been running two live blogs on scribble ever since, our Japan Earthquake live blog has 1550 pages of information. Some of us are conducting our own research and analysis of images and data. We also have begun compiling our own website SimplyInfo.com currently at , houseoffoust.com

I have recently completed two papers addressing concerns and current research on heat-related illness that may be of benefit to the workers at Fukushima Dai-Ichi. I am interested in publishing my white paper on the subject. It contains valuable information from a healthcare perspective on managing heat related illness at the plant. It  was written in humble, objective proactive manor and contains about 2,600 words.

I am also interested in having the 800 word article published in Japan in hopes of helping the make the difficult situation the workers face a bit more tolerable. I have submitted queries to several papers in Japan.

Since I started working on my Fukushima heat papers at least 8 more workers have succumbed to heat stroke. I am new to publishing but have not yet published on line for fear of not getting it published at a journal or news paper that can really get the word out. I have experienced the power of publication, and know that these documents can make a difference.

If you can offer any advice or assistance in getting the word out, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

  • Morning everyone!!!
    by Angie 6/8/2011 11:28:34 PM

  • Hi @carabnr! When I am back in Japan I can talk to a few people and give you better advice. But, besides that I would say that in many ways publishing online is a better way to reach a larger audience. Many academics prefer to publish in traditional journals rather than online journals, but when you publish in online journals then anyone can access the article right now and repost it. We find that many more people cite the articles when they are published online. Now it may be true that places like the NYT and Japanese papers reach a larger audience than academic journals (they couldn't reach a smaller audience!) but online publishing is a very effective way to reach a lot of people quickly. Anyways, when I am back in Japan next week I will talk to a few people that I know and ask for advice about Japanese publishing and other options and get back to you.

  • @Angie thanks. This is still a drive by visit. It's 1:30 am here in Paris and I'm beat. But glad to be talking to everyone. When I am back in Japan I'll be back full time. And @carabnr that is certainly true. I will try to help find a good publisher to place your articles.

  • @es Looks like lots of details on the ground preparation for the plant. It could be very useful to figure out how the ground acted and where/how the leaking water is going.
    by lillymunster 6/8/2011 11:38:45 PM

  • @es what language do you speak?
    by carabnr 6/8/2011 11:39:16 PM

  • @carabnr English first and foremost. @Nancy Yes, I thought that too re the water.
