  • @Peter Melzer but even if it is bound it can be substituted .... cesium and kalium for example .... and it ends up in the blood again .... for a new cycle.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/30/2011 4:28:06 PM

  • Yes, the completely bound stuff will govern actual half-life in the body, and at that point it becomes straight radioactive decay, right? I'm trying to get a handle on whether this method of parsing these numbers is designed to clarify or mystify.
    by RadioGuy 6/30/2011 4:28:37 PM

  • @Edano Good points too. It's a moving target by nature, but it seems like they're working overtime to confuse any clarity that even begins to emerge.

  • @RadioGuy : pharmacology is surely the most complicated compartment of medicine. it is exact science, but very complex.
    by Edano 6/30/2011 4:34:32 PM

  • @Edano And then 10% of what's left becomes a target for immediate elimination over 5 days because it never gets absorbed before its eliminated, or it's easily flushed. I guess I understand what they're getting at: more granularity in gauging biological effects. Sort of the equivalent of using a false-color image to spread the definition enough that you can see distinctions better..

TEPCO starts system to cool another spent fuel pool at nuclear plant

    TOKYO, July 1, Kyodo

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday that it had activated a water circulation system to stably cool another spent nuclear fuel pool at the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi atomic power plant, while also starting to transfer relatively low-level radioactive water at the plant to an artificial floating island called a megafloat.

The plant operator is hoping to efficiently cool the spent fuel pool of the No. 3 unit, having started a similar cooling system for the No. 2 unit's pool.

The utility known as TEPCO is trying to contain the world's worst nuclear crisis since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, in line with a road map that aims to stabilize by January the plant's reactors and spent fuel pools, which lost their key cooling functions in the wake of the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

  • @Edano , yes, whatever the precise mechanisms are, the biological elimination process with the slowest rate will eventually determine the radiation absorbed dose when the half-life of the radioisotope is long in comparison. Cs-137 is a good example of such isotope (strontium-90 ia another example).

    by elainekirk 6/30/2011 9:22:36 PM

  • The heat stroke plan, I do hope they treat the contractors on an equal footing with that document. It is hard to tell what refers to non-TEPCO staff continually working at the plant and very temporary contract workers like someone who comes in just to do one thing and leave due to a specialty or as a representative of a company that supplied a part etc. At least they seem to be finally doing something about it.

  • by Edano 6/30/2011 9:25:48 PM

  • @Elaine Kirk If it is leaking back and forth between the fuel pool and reactor well, keeping both full would solve the problem if the air seals somehow allow leaking outside the 2 units it would be a larger problem. I don't think the gate opens into the containment cavity but could have a leak there if something cracked. Seeing what they have photos of in that new handout make me think they may have let it drop intentionally to access some equipment. You think they would announce this is intentional though. They are pretty good at covering their behinds and making excuses. So if it was for a reason one would think they would mention.
