    by Ian 6/30/2011 1:31:46 AM

  • @Ian @Ian Yikes! So if the cesium products produced by the fuel rods do the exact same thing then the creation of cesium creates hydrogen?

Paging someone with a better science background than me! :-)

  • M5.4 quake jolts Nagano Pref., injuring 7

    TOKYO, June 30, Kyodo

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 jolted Nagano Prefecture and its vicinity in central Japan on Thursday morning, injuring at least seven people, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The 8:16 a.m. quake measured upper 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Matsumoto in the prefecture and 4 in Yamagata, also in Nagano, according to the agency.

Seven people in their 40s to 70s were injured, according to firefighters in Matsumoto. Among them, a woman in her 70s is suspected of suffering a bone fracture. No tsunami warning was issued.

  • By pure happenstance I ran into that video. The question is if the cesium from fuel is in the right configuration to explode. Obviously cesium usually rests in peace in SFPs. But can you have sudden increases in the level and concentration of cesium? In the video example, I think they're dropping in like a cesium nugget, solid or liquid. But that's not specified exactly what the cesium used is like. Consider also the relatively extreme levels of cesium measured in SFP3 vs the other SFPs.

    by Panserbjorne9 6/30/2011 2:00:53 AM

  • @Ian the cesium released from reactors is compound with other elements, eg cesiomiodid. this will not explode in water. pure cesium is a metal that will not be emitted.

  • natrium for example explodes in water, but when you put NaCl (normal cooking salt) in water, it will not explode. imagine the cooking accidents all over the world.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/30/2011 2:07:13 AM

  • @Edano, thanks, that's what I expected. It is interesting that they said the cesium produces hydrogen gas on contact with water. Is cesium part of how hydrogen in from reactors and SFPs is produced?
    by Ian 6/30/2011 2:11:33 AM

  • @Ian : no. it's the fuel cladding (zirkonium) that produces hydrogen. cesium in exploding, metal form is not produced.
    by Edano 6/30/2011 2:14:43 AM

  • natrium and cesium and some other elements cause hydrogen explosions when in contact with water, but this is not what happens in the pools / reactors.
    by Edano 6/30/2011 2:17:46 AM

  • @Ian - loved that video! I realize we will not see cesium nuggets hitting the water. But, as a wild child, I loved my explosive science experiments.

    by Lurking 6/30/2011 2:28:36 AM

  • @Edano, thanks again! Yeah, I can't find any hydrogen-contributory factor other than zirconium cladding. So it seems the presence of zirconium was the deciding factor in the existence of the explosions.
    by Ian 6/30/2011 2:34:17 AM

  • @Lurking thanks. Lucked out on finding that video.
    by lillymunster 6/30/2011 2:34:59 AM

  • @Lurking BTW, I think Majj posted it early this morning..
    by lillymunster 6/30/2011 2:35:31 AM

  • No, what a minute, another possible hydrogen contributor is radiolysis.
    by Ian 6/30/2011 2:36:40 AM

  • @Lillymunster, sometimes it's nice to have them posted more than once. My day job gets in the way of my search for info!
    by Lurking 6/30/2011 2:40:08 AM

  • Radiolysis is suggested as a theory for hydrogen build up in Unit 4, it's (if I recall) were high enough gamma radiation can disassociate H2O into H2 and O. See Professor Sekimura's report page 52 dels.nas.edu for presentation of radiolysis as a causal thesis for Unit 4's explosion.

  • @lillymunster. I just stumbled on CNN iReports. This may be a good place to publish original content from www.SimplyInfo.org. ireport.cnn.com What kind of content is welcome here?
CNN iReport is a place to post your news: great stories of events near you, or your own take on issues making headlines. News comes in all shapes and sizes, and the idea here at iReport is that the community will shape what counts as news, but there are a few things every iReport should have in common:
It's yours. Your iReports should be made up of your own words and images, or those that you have the rights to use.
It's true. iReports should be about real events, or real opinions on events. It's not news if you make it up.
It's new and interesting. The best iReports teach us something new or start a fresh discussion.
