  • Double whammy, The bad capacitor caused the neutral to fail,it had corrosion,. It is very hard to fix things with two failure points at the same time. I only mention this because Nuke plants are much the same. Anyone can handle one failure point, but two at the same time?

  • The Los Alamos County Council will be holding a town hall meeting today at Thursday, June 30:

    · 5 p.m. at the Senior Center, One Kee Street, Santa Clara Pueblo.
If any techie types are in the area, that would be a great opportunity to hear and be heard. To bad Dean is in Bosie and not Santa Fe and Peter is in Virginia, I believe....I am in PA (not that I am technically qualified), and Bo is in Japan. Rob in SF or MS in la could catch a $99 flight from Southwest if they wanted to disrupt their day, but if there are any lurkers who have come because of the developments in Los Alamos...or if Reed comes back....also, @all....has there been any thought of maybe putting together the $65 to have one of our regualrs, bo, bobby, Edano, Elaine, lily, etc. to attend and view the NY times webcast? I know there had been talk of setting up something to help George Gibb pay for the Scribble upkeep costs, though I think nothing really happened with that.....you can't buy much with that few bucks, and so I think that I would be good for $15, so if ten other people pitched in just five bucks, which is a gallon of gas, or a good latte, or a pack of radioactive ciggarettes, that would give us a front seat at something that is as cutting edge as mainstream media (sorta) is getting on this issue.

  • Improperly set valve halts water treatment system

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, says an improperly adjusted valve has led to a halt in the operation of a key water decontamination system at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

TEPCO has repeatedly suspended the water decontamination operation. The operation is vital to reducing the amount of highly radioactive water building up in the plant. The treated water is also circulated to cool down the reactors.

At around 7 PM on Wednesday, TEPCO had to shut down the system again after contaminated water was found overflowing in a French-made radiation removal unit. An investigation found that an incorrectly set valve is most likely to blame.

The decontamination operation resumed two hours later.

At the Number 6 reactor's turbine building, low-level contaminated water is increasing. TEPCO plans to start on Thursday afternoon transferring low-level radioactive water stored in make-shift tanks into a giant steel barge called "megafloat" attached to a quay on the plant's premises.

The tanks are nearing their full capacity of 12,000 tons. TEPCO aims to pump around 8,000 tons of contaminated water into the giant barge in three or four months.

"At 12:00 pm on June 28, we found the water level gauge (manometer) of temporary tank where accumulated water from turbine building in Unit 6 will be transferred lying on the floor. Since accumulated water was leaking from the gauge, we stopped it by closing main valve."
