  • Hi Elaine--just wanted to say thanks for posting, moderating, writing, and caring, as I head for the tatami, as Bo says. See you tomorrow (I joined you in the house clearing today, it was satisfying, and there will be more tomorrow. Good luck with that!)

  • www.fnmoc.navy.mil Typhoon Ma-On, now packing 125 mph winds, continues to threaten Japan.
Winds in Ma-On strengthened from 105 mph to 135 mph on Friday before weakening slightly. The storm has since re-strengthened today and further intensification is expected as it passes across the extremely warm waters of the Philippine Sea.
Ma-On will become a Super Typhoon (winds of 150 mph or higher) Friday night or Saturday.
Ma-On will reach its peak intensity this weekend with sustained winds in the 150- to 160-mph range.
The storm will continue to turn northwest through the rest of today, before turning northward Sunday and Monday. The earlier the turn to the north occurs, the better chance Ma-On will miss a direct landfall on southern Japan. However, the most likely track at this time takes Ma-On into the Kyushu or Shikoku islands in southern Japan early next week.
Widespread adverse impacts from rain, wind and heavy seas would result from a direct hit on the southern mainland. Heavy rain, high winds and rough seas could also impact the site of the tsunami and nuclear disaster north of Tokyo.

  • TEPCO checking for gas leak from No. 3 reactor
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is checking for gas leaks in the No. 3 reactor, into which nitrogen is being injected to prevent a hydrogen explosion.

Tokyo Electric Power Company has injected more than 200 cubic meters of nitrogen into the reactor's containment vessel since Thursday evening. But it says the interior air pressure has increased very little. www3.nhk.or.jp

"Kirin Brewery Co. will resume operations at its Sendai plant on Sept. 26 and start beer shipments in early November, the company has announced.

Operations were suspended after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 when the ensuing tsunami toppled four of the 15 vats at the plant, which is located in an industrial complex adjacent to Sendai Port.

However, operations will remain at 60 percent of the pre-disaster level for the time being. Power was restored at the plant last Saturday.

Kirin plans to use hops harvested in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, for its beer in an effort to assist reconstruction of the disaster-hit Tohoku region."

    by elainekirk 7/16/2011 12:42:42 PM

  • @elainekirk Re energy saving - it's hard for me to fathom the lack of knowledge around this. I live in a rural area of Spain where I collect my drinking water from a mountain spring and where grid power is unrelieable to say the least. We have coiled black hosing on the roof to heat water and we never miss the chance to recharge devices in the car, where possible. Torches, battery chargers, radios are all solar powered and we have a couple of PV panels which maintain a couple of car batteries full of charge, just in case. Other residents are fully off-grid and out of necessity are forced to devise ingenious ways to save and use energy wisely - many have small deisel generators for back-up, especially in winter. All new builds here must have solar water heating. LED lights are available alongside standard bulbs in most highstreet supermarkets, and are often competitively priced and affordable.

    by es 7/16/2011 1:16:15 PM
