(Reuters) - Japan's demand for crude and oil products to fuel power plants could triple if the country shuts all its nuclear reactors due to growing public safety concerns after the March earthquake and tsunami.

  • My friend called me just after it hit. He said the whole building was shaking for quite a bit. Had to hang onto a wall. He said everyone in the hotel was very on edge. Too bad we will have no visibility on the webcams until morning. Ugh. EQ, typhoons. Thor is angry!
    by bo 7/15/2011 12:32:24 PM

  • Unit #4's been steaming on TEPCAM since that quake - steam was not visible prior to that.
    by es 7/15/2011 12:34:41 PM

  • rockhopper's comment on the quake See... an inland M5.5 shakes the ground as strong as an off-the-coast M7. Plus, inland one's shake feels more violent than off-the-coast one

  • from rockhopper:
Safety limit for tap water: WHO=1Bq/liter, Germany=0.5, US=0.111, JP (radioiodine or radiocesium)=10 (until 3/17), JP=300 (after 3/17). (cont) JP gov raised the safety limit for tap water arbitrarily on the March 17th, without letting its citizens to know it.

  • Twitpic from Kashiwa. The same area asuperdry's high rad readings are coming from. Parent posted test results showing radiation in his child's urine test. This is a suburb of Tokyo....

  • @lillymunster so they can say tap water is below limits without people realising the limits have been raised
    by elainekirk 7/15/2011 12:45:32 PM

  • @elainekirk Just like the US tried to do only much worse. I asked rockhopper if he has a source for the numbers so we can do a story.

  • Farm ships 42 cows fed irradiated straw
Another town in Fukushima has tainted beef
    Kyodo
FUKUSHIMA — The Fukushima Prefectural Government said a farm in the town of Asakawa shipped 42 cows to Tokyo and other places after feeding them straw containing high levels of radioactive cesium, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Friday it found a high level of cesium in beef produced from some of the cattle.
Miyagi Prefecture said Friday it found 3,600 becquerels of cesium per kilogram in straw checks at three places in the prefecture. Following the discovery, the prefecture ordered about 900 farms in the prefecture not to feed their cows straw harvested after March 11. search.japantimes.co.jp

  • @ lilly and elaine.. I was thinking this morning before getting up.. I wonder if it would be a good idea for some of the communities to pool together and procure a HEPA filtering or other filtering system that will reduce the levels of contamination in the water and then have a central distribution system... children first then others..

  • Filtering Radiation from Drinking Water

Reverse osmosis water filters, tested in a seven county study in South central Montana, where found to remove radioactive particles. The Boulder Batholith granitic formation in Montana has been identified for its uranium contanimation. Rod Caldwell, a USGS scientist, comments, "radioactive elements, are unstable trace elements that naturally occur in rocks, soil and groundwater." Costs for RO systems range in price from $150 to $2,900 The Jefferson county Evironmental Health Department stated, "the mid-range models seemed to work best." Source: Billings Gazette
    by dean 7/15/2011 1:18:14 PM

  • @dean So sort of bulk purchases of HEPA filters and RO systems?
    by lillymunster 7/15/2011 1:22:23 PM

  • Happy is posting that the nitrogen injection in 3 found leaks in the piping to the RPV. That it will take a while to track down and that it is a source of radiation leaking. Also that the plutonium is causing work to be more difficult.

  • by dean 7/15/2011 1:32:18 PM

  • @dean The dynamic Bo mentioned where the local govt. seems to be picking up where the national govt. is failing, this would fit well with that. Have the local govt do bulk orders to lower the cost.

  • @dean those look pretty straightforward. Need to ask about the use of forced air heating in homes in Japan.
    by lillymunster 7/15/2011 1:38:52 PM

  • Remember that Safecast raised funding ($37k) from small donations at Kickstarter. It may be a way to raise money to fund some filters.

  • I found this press Release On a Radiation Remover

Radioactive Removal Press Release For April 8, 2011

Total Radioisotope Aqua Purifier (The Rad Trap)

Loprest Water Treatment Company now offers a countertop cartridge filter capable of removing radioactive particles from drinking water. The cartridge filter uses a unique blend of filter medias, including zeolites and ion exchange polymers, that selectively remove radioactive isotopes from drinking water whether they are naturally occurring or from decay products of man-made nuclear fuels.

The cartridge includes a media that specifically removes Iodine 131, another for Cesium 137 and another for Strontium 90. These isotopes are retained within the filter cartridge, keeping the consumer from ingesting even minute radioactive particles, well below the maximum contaminant level (MCL) allowed by the federal EPA. The cartridge media also removes other contaminants including suspended solids, chlorine and organics.

Loprest Water Treatment makes filtration equipment for the removal of Arsenic, Chrome VI, Iron, Manganese and Nitrate from groundwater sources. Please visit our website for additional details www.loprest.com
