  • @Elaine - saved all the docs and pics. What do you think TEPCO is up to with all of this? The radiation release maps. Do you think they are models or actual? It seemed like there were multiples showing different directions?
    by lillymunster 10/15/2011 2:04:51 PM

  • @lillymunster I dont know I cannot find that pdf referenced anywhere and yet it was in the public docs file for today. There is another news release about the emergency operation manual recording demands from gov and tepco effectively ignoring them www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 10/15/2011 2:11:06 PM

  • @elainekirk I saved a copy in case it was a slip up and they might pull it down. IT would be helpful if we could get Rockhopper or Ob Li to take a peek at it and just see if it says something about it being actual or modeling etc. If there is anything else in the text that might give a hint at the intention. They don't need to translate the whole big mess on each page, just see if they can glean the intent of the maps.
    by lillymunster 10/15/2011 2:13:19 PM

  • Either way those maps to me look like TEPCO knew releases were or could be happening right from the quake on.
    by lillymunster 10/15/2011 2:13:56 PM

  • I think there may have been an elaborate cover up but that is only guessing. There was a 7.2 quake a couple of days prior to the 9 one www.smh.com.au I dunno did that cause damage? I did wonder about rockhopper or maybe pull skf in?
    by elainekirk 10/15/2011 2:14:02 PM

  • @elainekirk Wow. I don't think I ever heard of that before. No mention among workers interviewed so far about known damage before the quake but that was strong enough it could have done something that just wasn't obvious yet to weaken structures.
    by lillymunster 10/15/2011 2:15:58 PM

  • I added that link to the library so we don't lose it. BTW, did you see the overnight link about the 10,000 people nuke plant siege in India?

  • from the doc below!!!!!

"On March 9, there was a M7.3 earthquake off-shore of Sanriku.(The rest is omitted.)"
In the vicinity of the recent event, there was brisk seismicity such as four earthquakes of M5.0 or over in the last month.

On March 9, there was a M7.3 earthquake off-shore of Sanriku. The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event occurred on the boundary between the Pacific and the continental plates. According to the GPS data, crustal movements associated with this event were observed and there was a movement of approximately 3 cm toward the east-southeast at the Ofunato station (Iwate prefecture)

  • @elainekirk have been thinking all the time of your radiation maps. maybe they chose zulu time and not JST. then the eartquake was 6:45 am GMT. i think 9 hours earlier, but it still does not fit.
    by Edano 10/15/2011 5:07:41 PM

  • @Edano there was a 6.8 on the 10th and a 7.3 on the 9th the one on the 10th was slap bang next to the big one
    by elainekirk 10/15/2011 5:27:16 PM

  • @elainekirk yes, i know, there were prequakes. but do you want to assume that radiation was released before the big one ? venting ???
i do not think that 6.8 or 7.3 was beyond design ........ and shouldn't they have scrammed if there was an emergency before ?
    by Edano 10/15/2011 5:34:16 PM

  • Seismologists discuss 3/11

Japanese earthquake experts, at their first symposium since the March 11th disaster, have discussed improving ways to provide society with information on major earthquakes.

The Seismological Society of Japan hosted the 4-day meeting at Shizuoka University in central Japan. The gathering ended on Saturday.

At the beginning of the final session, 500 participants offered a silent prayer for the victims of the March disaster.

Many of the scholars expressed regret that they were unable to predict the March 11th earthquake.

Tohoku University Professor Toru Matsuzawa said the experts thought that an earthquake off the Tohoku region would have had a magnitude of no more than 8, based on data accumulated during the last 100 years. He said an unconventional approach would have been necessary to predict an earthquake of such magnitude.

Professor emeritus Katsuhiko Ishibashi of Kobe University has been warning about the potential risks earthquakes pose to nuclear power plants.

He said seismologists are responsible for informing the public about the risks of natural disasters that are likely to hit their local areas. He said people have no way of knowing the truth if the scholars remain silent, adding that they must disclose everything they know.

The group will complete a report on their earthquake studies by next spring.

  • Protests against economic gap held in Tokyo

As protests continue in the US, hundreds of people have staged similar demonstrations in Tokyo.

The Japanese event was held on Saturday as part of simultaneous protests worldwide called on the Internet by people supporting demonstrations on Wall Street that started last month.

About 170 demonstrators marched in central Tokyo, calling for eradicating poverty. Some also appealed for an end to nuclear power generation. An organizing group member expressed his hope that public movements will spread this way in Japan.

At a different part of Tokyo, about 80 protesters gathered to appeal for the creation of more jobs and correction of economic disparities. A participant said he wants to work with others to create a happy society for all.
