  • Good morning, as to the sad Tc-99m story, this technician clearly committed a crime and, I assume, will do time for it. Tc-99m en.wikipedia.org is widely used as radioactive tracer in scintigraphy because of its short 6-hour half-life and the comparably low energy of its gamma radiation at 140 keV. Depending on the chemical compound that the tracer labels, it can be used to diagnose the function of a number of organs and to render tumors. For example, bound to phosphonates Tc-99m accumulates in bone cancer tumors. Another common use is the rendering of thyroid cancer with [Tc-99m]pertechnetate. The method does not involve X-rays and Tc-99m does not always concentrate in the kidneys.

  • @lillymunster I just read the AP piece from the Bellingham paper, and posted it to FB. I think it helps people when they are able to understand specifics, like these, about the industry and state of affairs. Thanks, Lilly!

  • @Peter I was surprised that someone hadn't caught it before. Maybe the processes at that hospital don't have records review or multiple people working in the radiology lab?
    by lillymunster 10/16/2011 3:01:34 PM

  • @lillymunster , in a small hospital, the tech could have been the only one qualified to dose radiopharmaceuticals, and they carried out roughly one procedure with children a month. They must have trusted the person.
    by Peter 10/16/2011 3:24:51 PM

  • @Peter I was under the impression it was a busier hospital. I could see them getting away with it at a small facility.

  • I think there is ignorance in Japan of the true risks of radiation, they have been spun the lie for 3 generations
    by elainekirk 10/16/2011 4:34:21 PM

  • @elainekirk don't be so radiophobic :) trust in hormesis.
    by Edano 10/16/2011 4:39:42 PM

  • @elainekirk It might not be pure ignorance, but resilience. After all, they were the only nation in the world to withstand and survive two major nuclear strikes... this must have had a strong effect on their education and it might have been used by pro nuke agents to belittle the true effects of radiation on humans (which, may I add, are still subject to a lot of controversy within the scientific community).
by Pedro Jesus 10/16/2011 4:43:48 PM

  • You have to remember the time period between the bombings and the installation of nuclear power plants. There was a massive propaganda campaign to convince people non-war applications of nuclear were "good". If you get told something day in and day out without any other input it tends to sink into the common understanding that way
    by lillymunster 10/16/2011 4:51:45 PM

  • @lillymunster Exactly my point. And facing the contradiction of the recent dreadful disaster will take some time (not months but maybe years or even another generation); this «new» reality might take long to seep through the previous cultural brainwash.
by Pedro Jesus 10/16/2011 4:58:01 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus I mentioned this about the US the other day. Post TMI and Chernobyl we heard almost nothing about nuclear power as if they purposely went into hiding. Then they started this nuclear renaissance and nuclear is green propaganda a few years ago. I think they hoped people forgot or never learned of the previous accidents smoothing the way for new plants. Then BAM Fukushima happened. There is a distinct learning curve going on here as people try to educate the average consumer about what we are being peddled.
    by lillymunster 10/16/2011 5:06:57 PM

  • @lillymunster Yes, pro nuke PR were very proficient at downplaying the global safety issue as compared to environmental benefits of nuclear power. Lets not let people forget about the inherent risks of nuclear power any more. There are better solutions out there now - this is the 21st century after all.
by Pedro Jesus 10/16/2011 5:13:29 PM

  • We installed our first solar panel yesterday - took me 5 min - added it to the garage to charge a back up power battery we have out there. :-) Total cost $20
    by lillymunster 10/16/2011 5:14:39 PM

  • @lillymunster Well, there you are. Congratulations. =) I'd do the same here if I owned the place, but unfortunately I'm only renting.
by Pedro Jesus 10/16/2011 5:17:15 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus The one I bought had suction cup hooks with it for sticking to a window. :-) They opened a tool/hardware store in town that carries solar panels and charging equipment off the shelf. The hubbies boss started a wind & solar company that installs in homes. We keep telling him he can use ours as a model home. :-)
    by lillymunster 10/16/2011 5:18:52 PM

  • @lillymunster Yes, renewable energy harnessing technology is so advanced and affordable now that there is no excuse for whoever owns property to not implement some of those off the shelf solutions available. The benefits overwhelm the investment burden.
by Pedro Jesus 10/16/2011 5:22:40 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus @lillymunster I think we would be good for solar the cost here is nothing like 20dollars though
