by the way: cancer cells are no "aliens". they are morphologically and functionally almost normal, very specialized organ cells, only in the wrong places and "out of control".

Unit 6
From November 15, due to cleanup work in order to prevent performance
deterioration of pump caused by inletting sand or other materials piled
up at the bottom of pump room of intake channel, Residual Heat Removal
System (A) was shutdown, and stopped cooling the reactor. And Seawater
pump of Equipment Water Cooing System (A) was shutdown, and stopped
cooling the spent fuel pool. The stop is scheduled from 7:00 am to 5:00
pm everyday, and reactor water temperature will rise by approx. 12°C per
day, and spent fuel pool water temperature will rise by approx. 3°C per
day. (The cleanup work is planned to be finished in a week.)www.tepco.co.jpby elainekirk 11/15/2011 11:24:42 AM

We received the instruction document* titled "Response based on the report

of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on October 14.
(Previously announced on October 14)
Per the instructions, we have organized materials regarding information
contained in the Accident Operations Manual of Units 1 to 3 at Fukushima
Daiichi Nuclear Power Station that may be detrimental to safety and reported
them to NISA on November 14.

@Mona it is vice versa: xenon (131) is the daughter product of iodine (131).
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:36:05 AM

xenon 135 decays to cesium 135.
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:41:57 AM

@Edano what do you make of the unit6 cooling being suspended?
by elainekirk 11/15/2011 11:42:00 AM

some of the xenon-x isotopes (110<=x<=127) decay to iodine-x, but not 133.
en.wikipedia.org full xenon isotopes table
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:45:28 AM

some of the iodine-x isotopes (126<=x<=144) decay to xenon-x.
en.wikipedia.org full iodine isotopes table.
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:48:42 AM

so we can summarize, for nucleus masses below 126, we have a decay from xenon to iodine, but for nucleus masses over 128, decay from iodine to xenon. the questionable isotopes in a nuclear accident mainly have higher masses than 128. (iodine 129, 131, xenon 133, 136, cesium 134, 135, 137)
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:56:03 AM

@elainekirk if it is a planned suspension, it is okay, i think.
by Edano 11/15/2011 11:58:30 AM

i can imagine there must be a lot of sand in the water intakes due to the tsunami.

@Edano ah that is good to know
by elainekirk 11/15/2011 12:02:02 PM

@elainekirk they stop cooling during daytime, but resume it every night. i think this poses no threat to reactor health. :)
by Edano 11/15/2011 12:03:45 PM

... only as long as it is in cold shutdown, of course.
by Edano 11/15/2011 12:04:38 PM

Nuclear Event in MultiCountries on Friday, 11 November, 2011 at 15:22 (03:22 PM) UTC.
Updated: Tuesday, 15 November, 2011 at 11:29 UTC
Description
France's nuclear watchdog on Tuesday said it had detected traces of radioactive iodine in the air last week after similarly low contamination was reported by the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. Concentrations of iodine 131 measuring a few microbecquerels per cubic metre were detected last week at four monitoring stations in
northern and eastern France, the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) said. "Although
the presence of iodine 131 over national territory is quite exceptional... the level of concentrations that have been observed are of no risk for public health," it said in a press release. "The source and date of the radioactive emissions which caused this pollution are currently unknown," the IRSN said. Iodine is a very short-lived isotope that decays to half of its radioactivity in only eight days. For this reason, the source is unlikely to be Japan's crippled nuclear power plant at Fukushima, where iodine was released in March but later stopped, the agency said. A possible source could be a reactor used for electricity or research or a plant using iodine 131 to make medical devices, the IRSN speculated.

"the presence of iodine 131 over [french] national territory is quite exceptional".
true words. even during chernobyl, france did not have higher radiation levels ! :) honi soit qui mal y pense....
by Edano 11/15/2011 12:11:46 PM

france has an integrated firewall over its territory against radiation. very practical. a radiation maginot threshold, so to say. :)

Radioactive material removed from Setagaya lot
A radioactive substance detected in Setagaya Ward in Tokyo was removed on Tuesday. After a brief scare, it was found to be unrelated to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The substance was detected at a supermarket parking lot and nearby sidewalk in the ward last month.
Officials conducted work to remove the substance from the ground where the highest reading was registered.
They say a bottle-like object was found underground.
The science ministry says it is highly likely that the bottle contains radium 226, which was used for treating cancer and as an ingredient in luminous paints.

Kyushu Electric again denies governor's roleThe president of Kyushu Electric Power has again denied that the company's attempt to manipulate public opinion on nuclear energy was triggered by remarks from the governor of Saga Prefecture.
An independent panel was set up to investigate after employees at Kyushu Electric were discovered to have sent fake e-mails in favor of restarting the utility's Genkai nuclear plant in Saga. The emails were submitted at a government meeting with local residents in June.
The panel found that Governor Yasushi Furukawa had told utility executives that some in the business community favored resuming 2 reactors at the Genkai plant, and that it was necessary to present such views in a public meeting.
But Kyushu Electric denied the governor's involvement in its final report about the scam released last month.
President Toshio Manabe told reporters after submitting the report that he could not bring false charges against an innocent person.
Last week, the head of the panel, Nobuo Gohara, sent an open inquiry to Manabe demanding to know the grounds for his remark.
In a response dated Monday, Manabe did not answer Gohara's question, but only reiterated his denial that the governor had played any role in the scam. He added that he would not answer any more questions pertaining to individuals.
Gohara has dismissed Manabe's reply, saying it is not a valid response at all.

Government-backed fund grants TEPCO $7.3 bil.Japan's government-backed nuclear disaster fund has transferred over 7.3 billion dollars to the operator of the Fukushima plant to assist compensation payments.
The money is the first installment of about 11.8 billion dollars in public money earmarked to Tokyo Electric Power Company by the end of the fiscal year next March.
The rest of the money will be provided after it has been confirmed that compensation is being paid properly to those affected by the nuclear crisis.
TEPCO is expected to pay back the money, which was transferred Tuesday, but the utility must also shoulder the huge cost of scrapping the plant's reactors.
The troubled company will draw up a new business plan next spring, including measures to rationalize management.

Work to reduce radiation in Tokyo
Workers measure radiation levels at a blocked road beside the premises of a supermarket in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward on Nov. 15, 2011, before an operation to lower the levels. The high radiation levels in the area are apparently not related to an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, as a buried bottle containing radium was removed at the supermarket site earlier in the month. update:
2nd bottle found underground in Tokyo radiation caseTOKYO, Nov. 15, Kyodo
A bottle believed to have contained radium was found underground near a supermarket in Tokyo's Setagawa Ward on Tuesday in the second discovery of such a bottle since high levels of radiation were detected in the area last month, government officials said.
An official of the ward office said the substance inside the bottle was highly likely to be radium 226. The bottle was found in underground soil at a spot where the reading of radiation reached 170 microsieverts per hour.
The radiation level measured several millisieverts on the bottle but radiation levels in the nearby area dropped after it was removed, according to the officials of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
