  • Monticello NPP had an emergency shutdown in Oct. Now another one? Soooo glad I don't live there right now.
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:24:12 PM

  • @lillymunster Ya!...but I am near it!! So have been following it's news. And the shut down this last weekend.
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:25:33 PM

  • I am curious as to how this highly radioactive part can go missing. They will now be searching the pool.
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:26:49 PM

  • @MaryW I used to live a few miles away.

How the heck do they lose a piece of equipment IN the spent fuel pool. I would say Homer Simpson works there but I think Homer works at all of them.
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:27:33 PM

  • Good idea...I will now call 'them' homers:)
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:31:52 PM

  • @MaryW you may want to avoid calling them that at the bar down the road after quitting time. :-)

Wonders if all NPP staff are party animals. The day crew from Rancho Seco were rather rowdy. Ran into a bunch from Monticello once too.
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:39:40 PM

  • May need the stress-release cocktail after a days work
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:41:47 PM

  • I'm also interested in the Elk river nuke plant that was converted in August 1989 to a biomass fuel plant, producing electricity from plant/animal wastes. Maybe all nuclear plants could be convert, thus, eliminating the land-fills
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:44:57 PM

  • by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:46:27 PM

  • @MaryW most nuke plants can be converted since the turbine building is the same. They did that to Pathfinder down here for a while, put in a natural gas burner to make steam. IIRC Elk River was another one of xCel's experimental reactors from when they were NSP.
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:47:10 PM

  • Your a great source of info since you lived in the neighborhood :)
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:48:28 PM

  • @MaryW Wiki says it was a small BWR but I think I saw something that they had one of the Allis Chalmers reactors aka: tractor reactors :-)

    by MaryW 11/22/2011 8:51:06 PM

  • Ah found an article on it. It was an Allis Chalmers atomicpowerreview.blogspot.com
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:52:33 PM

  • OMG LMAO - Elk River was part owned by AMF ( bowling balls, sports equipment)
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 8:54:25 PM

  • Interesting that this one also had a super heater on it. The super heater on the one in Sioux Falls is supposedly what failed when they tried to run it.
    by lillymunster 11/22/2011 9:02:01 PM

  • You can even plan a party! www.amf.com Maybe they make nuke bowing balls for night time games
    by MaryW 11/22/2011 9:02:45 PM

  • @MaryW It sounds like AMF lost the bid to Allis Chalmers at the last minute. If AMF made nuclear reactors like they made Harley Davidson Motorcycles in the 1960's and 1970's we would have all been doomed. :-)

  • The Elk River reactor before it was installed 1.bp.blogspot.com

    by lillymunster via 1.bp.blogspot 11/22/2011 9:08:23 PM

  • Interesting, Elk River was shut down for inspection soon after Pathfinder failed. They found reactor vessel cracks and permanently shut down Elk River atomicpowerreview.blogspot.com

  • Looking at the details on the EX SKF article on sea contamination this garbage should have hit the west coast by now. So glad the US authorities are totally on top of this keeping us safe and making sure seafood is safe....what? Um.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:09:09 AM

  • @Lily, we have not had any debris wash up as of yet. But a while back, mid summer or so, they put up warnings at the Oregon coast that if it did "Do not touch it and keep pets away". They just want it reported.
    by Lurking 11/23/2011 4:13:20 AM

  • @Lurking The last I heard was early October and a Russian ship found lots of debris by Midway island. I am really shocked how fast the contamination has flowed across the Pacific after all the promises it would dispurse, move slow etc. Seems we were all spot on about this one from day one.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:35:26 AM

  • Nite all! Should be up early foraging for news.

  • okay, i think it is time to complain about the new complete media blackout. there have been absolutely no news about the fuku disaster since last week, but i do think that people still want to be informed about the mess out there. i guess japanese journalists obey tepco's order not to inform the public anymore, but this is not their damn job. i can read more about fuku in german newspapers and tv than in japanese, and this is sick !!!

then let's make some euro nuke news. there is some clashing in france and will be in germany due to a castor transport. everything is kept secret, the timing and route of the waste transport, but it is hi rad plutonium. www.morgenpost.de

  • polpix.sueddeutsche.com this is in france ("Sortir du NuclĂ©aire")

resistance is well organized and the train will be sabotaged all along its way until gorleben. it will be very expensive for areva and the police. that's the policy: make it as expensive as possible.

  • castor transports are a sort of event in france and germany, wide parts of the public participate in obstacling them, especially farmers with their heavy machines. the train is really slow, with policemen running on both sides.
